shoulda stayed home

LOL…not really cause i had a blast with my 7yr old. did alot of him driving the boat and stuff like that.
It didn’t start good at all left the house and went about 100yrd before i realized the boat wasn’t following me:stuck_out_tongue: forgot to hook it up. Got hooked up and headed to the lake.
With reports of larger bait showing up at the landing thought, cool throw the net a couple time have plenty, no sense in buying any…yea that didn’t happen, was marking the bait SUPER SUPER thick at the landing but everytime i dropped the net nothing came up. Did this probably 4 times and got them stirred up enough that they rose to the top…bummer all really small bait, too small for my 1/2" mesh cast net. Cruised the rocks looking for larger bait, went to the towers and couple other bait locations. (this is when he probably had the best time cause i realized we weren’t going to be doing a whole lot of fishing, so i put him driving the boat) He actually did quite well for a 7yr old with a tiller handle.
Anyway was about to give up and head to the house but decided to go back to the landing and pull out a sabiki and see if we could pull some up that way. Great idea he got to catch some “fish” even if it wasn’t what we were after. ended up catching some bait pretty quick. Highlight of the day was catching a 3 or 4# largemouth on the sabiki. Kept feeling them getting ripped off but guess this one was a little too hungry.
Didn’t have alot of time cause he had school the next day but ran to the towers real quick, was marking a small of school of fish there when looking for bait. found them in the same place they were before and pulled 4 shorts out of there.
Not a perfect day but disaster averted. And hey he said he would go again…lol…i always ask him if he wants to go again when we come off the water…

That happens to me every time I don’t buy bait. Tonight I’m just getting 5 dozen and not counting on catching any. That should probably bring a record number of herring to the light. Any size to the sabiki herring? Can’t wait for the big tower herring. I’m going to take the kids there herring fishing this summer. Can’t beat those giant herring

Good post Chip. Always a good time when you get to spend time on the water with the kids whether you get’em or not. At least you noticed the boat wasn’t connected before you got all the way to the lake.

Tom, will check with you out there. We’re not putting in until about 8:30 and just going to depend on catching some bait. I’m pretty sure it will be thick now that I know you are buying 5 dozen.

I’m still debating where to fish. I’m sure we can get some where we fished earlier this week, but it’s near a pretty main thoroughfare. Guess I’ll just wait and see how much boat traffic is out ther once we get on the water.

I went to the dam at lunch and it was already crowded, but most leave before dark. Not much bait today, just a couple schools that were keeping out about 30’ from shore. Only saw two groups actively spawning so I think the spawn is pretty much over. We should be on the water by 6 or 6:30 so I’ll let you know how we are doing. Best fishing has been about 9:30 on.

Friend sent this to me earlier today. Video taken at the boat ramp this morning.

Looks like the word is out you are buying your bait.
