Shrimp Baiting

Hey, I’ve lived here almost four years now and although I’ve caught my share of shrimp with a cast net for bait while fishing, I’m intrigued by the boats with poles I see every October. So, I have a few questions if anyone would care to enlighten me. Just how does one go about baiting for shrimp? What do you use for bait and how is it presented? Is this a night fishing thing or is it just as productive in the day? Is this something done better in the creeks or in the rivers/harbor? Any insight provided would be appreciated…

There is a Shrimping page on the forum. Lots to learn there. Good luck.

Titan (forum Sponsor) sells shrimping poles. 14-16ft
Purchase Shrimp Bait license - $25
Purchase Bait Binder. (Hadrells, Charleston Angler, West marine, Ace Hardware) Read the bag for directions. Typically you make large patties about the size of a 1/4 pounder.

Net preferences vary but typically are 6-10ft 1/2 to 5/8" mesh. I use a 7ft 5/8" mesh. You may be throwing this net 100 times in a night so don’t get carried away.

Find your location, at first I setup in random locations away from other shrimpers while I figured out how it works. Get a little practice.

Set poles out in a line. The line can be along a contour, parallel, or perpendicular to the bank.
As per the regulations, each pole is spaced about 10yds apart for a total run not to exceed 100yds.
Place 1-3 bait ball patties approximately 5-8 ft in front of each pole. They should be placed exactly the same way on each pole, so when you are casting you know where each bait ball is located in reference to the pole.
Wait 15 min.
Slowly nose up to the pole and cast over the bait. Have the driver back up a little and pull the net up. It’s important to not prop wash the bait piles or drive over them. The boat will scare the shrimp away and propwash will spread the bait scent trail.

Water Management, There is a lot of water coming up with the net, if you run your poles 10 times, that’s 100 casts. If your boat isn’t self bailing, make sure your pumps are working.

People get a little passionate out there. If you decide to setup near other shrimpers, look around and get the lay of the land. If everyone is setting in the same direction, you will too. Don’t be that “f’in guy” that sets sideways and everyone has to work around them. Just not a way to make friends.

Give people their space, regulations say no closer than 75yds. Reality is, places like Crab Bank get real tight. I have seen where sets were double lined. One boat working the outside and one boat working the inside.

Arrive early. This gives you time to see (daylight) what is going o
