This may be a dumb question but would it be reasonable to ask a shrimp boat if they have any bait if you see one shrimping? Any experience with attempting this?
It would be very dumb to approach if they are pulling nets, don’t even get close:face_with_head_bandage:
But after they haul and are cleaning the deck it would be reasonable to most. We used to beg a lot of chum and dead bait from shrimp boats cleaning the deck. They’re just shoveling it overboard anyway. Talk to them real salty and offer them some beer. Ya never know, worse they can say is no. Don’t even think about it when they are fishing.

If you do get some by-catch for bait, look it over good as you don’t want the “man” to ticket you for fishing with a juvenile Trout or such.
The Gentleman I help from time to time gets ticked off when other boats approach him. Most certainly make sure the net is on board if you do try to approach one. Make it quick when you see the net come up and the sea gulls swarm as by-catch is usually quickly sorted and thrown back. We try to make it a point to put them back before the net goes back in so soon make it past the gauntlet of seagulls.
I hate seagulls, but love a good fried pork chop.
