Shrimp going bad from last year

Still have about 10 qts from last year and trying to use them up but am finding that when I thaw them they smell bad, not everyone but enough to make me wonder what I have done wrong. One qt is bad and the next qt ok caught the same trip or a week earlier turns out bad. The freezer bags arent open or havent leaked. Any guesses, this is the first year I have encountered, this unless the bags were breached and I can understand that.
Thanks

Are you freezing them in water?

Sometimes mine smell strong while pealing them. I wash them really good and they have been fine to eat. Some of mine are a couple years old and they have been fine.

My only delima is I am running out. Did not have a very good season last year.

I lost over 40 quarts when my freezer died, made me want to throw up…and they definately smelled! Looking for another upright freezer before season thats for sure!

Do you stack them in a pile when loading the freezer? Sometimes it will take a lot longer for the inner containers or bags to freeze and they can go bad.

That happened to us with venison one year. Processed 3 in one day and the middle rows went bad on us before they could freeze.

Yeh they are frozen in water and stacked upright until frozen solid. I just cant understand why 1 qt is bad and the next ok. Really appreciate the ■■■■■■■■ guys

I have had issues like that when I didn’t pop heads and freeze them on the night I caught them. I been told to ice them down good and leave drain plug unpluged by many people but the one time i did the shrimp smelled when thawed later in the year.

What kind of freezer do you have? Is it a frost free like the one on the refrigerator? You never want to store anything long term in a frost free freezer. The freezer is frost free because it automatically raises the temperature to allow the accumulated frost to melt. In addition to the frost, anything stored in it will slightly thaw then re-freeze especially aroung the perimeter.
