I was just wondering if you guys get creative with your shrimp patterns for the fall? I was at the vise last night in anticipation of coming down next weekend, So I was fooling around with some different stuff, mostly root beer and tan colors with some rubber legs and rabbit strips, I would assume that they aren’t too picky as long as its close? Any of you guys ever use polar bear fur? Thanks for any imput.
Polar bear fur? Is that legal? I have used some fox fur for a shrimp pattern I tie. It catches flounder for some reason. Root beer, tan and rubber legs all sound like good material. The strips haven’t worked for me but people say they work. Don’t forget some flash. Couldn’t hurt.
Oh yea there’s flash for sure, the legality of the polar bear fur is a topic that I am not too sure about, a lot of europeans use the stuff and I learned a bit about it on a overseas flyfishing forum, my local shop just got some but it is pretty expensive given the amount you get. I have been told that the thing about the polar bear fur is that it has a bit of a shine to it that attracts fish, they use it a good bit on bonefish flies (shrimp) but I would say craft fur would work fine I caught a bunch of bones with it. I would guess the reds, flounder & trout wouldn’t be too picky just make it look shrimpy and the right color right?
Yeah, I wasn’t really worried about it. Sounds kind of funny though. Like tying deceivers with bald-eagle feathers or something. I don’t see flies made out of fur much. So many are made with synthetic. Have fun tying!
a buddy used to tie a fly called the endangered species, bald eagle, grizzly bear and “clubbed” baby seal… didnt work, but was funny nonetheless…polar bear is awesome stuff if you can find it
I tie a “ginger” shrimp.
Copper flash, Ginger saddle hackle Palmered along the body, a few pieces of flashabou for antennae, mono eyes, and reddish brown bucktail.

The local environmental group here in Aspen has a pet golden eagle. My buddy works for them and I asked if he could get me a few feathers for tying. He said no, they have to collect them and hand them over to Division of Wildlife. Apparently having one is a $1000 fine or something absurd. Would love to tie a fly with a super expensive feather

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>Wow, the fines have really come down! I remember when they used figures like 50K and 75K. Yep, you can’t have feathers or bones or… well, anything. Not sure those Aspen guys refer to there eagle as a pet?
Just messing with you. A good buddy of mine has a raptor rehab center here in SC. They have a “pet” golden eagle too. Magnificent bird and deadly. I’ll stick with my farm raised chicken feathers.
I’ll double check on what the fine amount was. I think it was a grand but I could be wrong. They also have a horned owl. No idea on whether those feathers are legal to have or not. I love using chicken feathers from the neighboring farm. Back in Virginia my parents have 2 peacocks. I’ve got more herl than I could ever use!
its still legal. comes out of canada. very unusual stuff. i got some from a rug in an ebay lot and thought it was synthetic and the sheep hair was the bear. it looks like clear plastic. i dont sell it but i tie my own.
oh yeah. the bird fines hold true for any non game non pest. blue birds, flickers, jays, etc. not even supposed to pick one up. im sure ive received some multimillion dollar ebay lots when they stick in a bag of miscellaneous from some old guys vintage lot. guess im incorrigible.
