Shrimp price at the dock?

What is the going prices for shrimp at the docks. My cousin up in Charlotte is looking to buy 100lbs for a big party they are having on Lake Norman.

I was in Beaufort this past week and stopped by the Gay Fish Co. They want $6.75/lb. for 31-35 count tails only (heads off). (843) 838-2763. I saw these shrimp and they are about equivalent to either 16-20 count or probably closer to a 21-25 count heads-on shrimp. They are a large (not jumbo) shrimp. If you call, ask for William, he’s the one that deals in the larger quantities and will give you the best price. Be sure to call ahead as they are selling their shrimp as fast as they catch them and prices are changing regularly. I called Carolina Seafood in McClellanville about a week ago and they wanted $4.00/lb. for their 21-25 count heads-on shrimp. That’s about equivalent to $6.67/lb. for the same shrimp with the heads off. (843)887-3713.

Gay sells most of their shrimp, regardless of quantity, as tails only (heads off) while Carolina Seafood sells the larger quantities (50lb. boxes) as heads on, but I’m sure that you can get a price from either for what you want to buy. I haven’t checked in Charleston.

Remember, the heads account for about 40% of the weight, so 100lbs. of head-on will net you 60lbs. after you de-head them.

My dad owns the Richardson bros. at the end of Shem creek at the Wando dock. They went out of business so he is selling them all off the boat. Can’t beat being the first person to touch the shrimp off the boat. 2.50 to 3.50 depending on what size they catch that day. Just inbox me and I can set you up with him.

will he be selling them all season or just till he sells out?

we come down from the upstate 2 or 3 times a year to shrimp.would love to pick up some right off the boat to carry home.just need some info.also i think i would need some kind of reciept so if got checked by DNR.be rough trying to explain 100 lbs of shrimp in cooler while boat and shrimpbaiting stuff in tow.

Yes we have the wholesale license from the state so we can sell them to anyone and tie you a legitimate receipt. There won’t be any problems there. My phone number is 843-209-2050 just give me a call when you are ready for them

Then an easy thing to do is put in at Buckhall and go to the Cowpen to shrimp early in the morning. On your way back to the ramp, call Carolina Seafood (843-887-3713), pull into the creek at McClellanville, stop at the dock and buy them. You won’t necessarily be buying directly from the boat Captain, but indirectly from him through Carolina Seafood and you will be getting them as fresh as possible. You won’t even have to get out of your boat. Be sure to have cash and get a receipt. I am not sure about the legalities of having shrimp caught over bait (assuming you catch some) in a boat along side of bought shrimp, but I would think that with a receipt, you should be OK. The “man” can always call Carolina Seafood to verify what you bought.

Maybe someone else will post their opinions on the legal side of this, but what I can promise you is that you can buy them straight off of the dock out of your boat because I was with a friend who did just that a couple of years ago.

You need to call Carolina Seafood in MCLV and put in a order-it is so worth it. Great little town and worth the trip. I went one year and she gave me the “look” for not calling it in a 100lbs. They they were great to fill the 100lb on short notice, fresh, bring your own cooler.

Have lunch at TW Grahams Seafood as your order is filled and watch us as come in from the shrimping flats. MCLV is exactly 1hr30min from Florence, but Chas may be your best bet. We see her boat every time we go out so I know they are fresh.

There used to be a really nice B&B up there. My wife and I stayed there years ago (before kids) and really enjoyed it. It was on a deep water creek but I do not remember the name.
