Shrimping Federal Waters off SC

No skin in the game for those here I’m sure, but thought some might find it interesting:

Federal Waters Off South Carolina Closed to All Fishing for Brown, White, and Pink Shrimp Through May 31, 2014

Effective February 13, 2014, at 12:01am NOAA Fisheries federal waters off South Carolina are closed to the harvest of brown, pink, and white shrimp through May 31, 2014. South Carolina has closed its territorial waters to all shrimping as well. South Carolina fishery managers requested this closure due to a prolonged period of water temperatures at or below 9?C in the region.

During the federal closure, no person may trawl for brown, pink, or white shrimp in federal waters off South Carolina (closed area). Any vessel trawling in a part of a closed area that is within 25 nautical miles of South Carolina state waters must use trawl nets with a minimum mesh size of four inches or greater. Possession of brown, pink, or white shrimp is prohibited on board a vessel in the closed area unless the vessel is in transit through the area and all nets with a mesh size of less than four inches, as measured between the centers of opposite knots when pulled taut, are stowed below deck. The federal closure will be effective until the ending date of the closure in state waters, and may end earlier based on a request by South Carolina. In no case will the federal closure remain effective after May 31, 2014. NOAA Fisheries will issue a new Fishery Bulletin announcing the re-opening to shrimp harvest in federal waters off South Carolina.

I don think this will affect many guys around here, most shrimpers i know stopped around christmas time.

don't think it always closed until May 31st, this will cut out the early dragging for roe shrimp that may be present.

Yeah, sounds like they are giving the roe shrimp a little more spawning time in case the cold knocked down the breeding population.

Heard a couple of boats crushed some big white shrimp in federal waters near Brunswick in the last 10 days or so. 10,000 lb days. Hopefully enough survive the cold to spawn in the spring.

I heard the same thing last night. That sure helped out after what had been a slow season there. Would liked to have seen that.
