Shrimping in Sandy

2 months ago some friends and I decided to rent a house in MCVL for a weekend and kill some shrimp. We never anticipated a hurricane reaking havoc in late Oct…c’est la vie

We went out of MCVL on Friday, headed out to Cowpens- two boats hiding behind the dock trying to shrimp. We didnt want to crowd them and the water was ROUGH. So we battled up to Alligator Creek hoping the trees would knock off some of the NNW wind and waves. The ride from the point to Alligator was the scariest part of the weekend but the SS Combination Platter powered through. We set up 7 poles near Alligator in a way that we would fight the wind and waves the least. Due to conditions we could only throw the net every 8 minutes or so because it was so hard to reposition the boat. Throwing with the wind you could throw the net 30’ away from the pole and it would carry it right to it. We ended up with 1/4 cooler of really nice shrimp over about 3 hours.

On Saturday we went back and did same thing, same place and again 1/4 cooler nice shrimp. Waves weren’t as bad (realitive speaking) but still Forest Gump and Lt. Dan came to mind many times. Didn’t see another boat all day.

Went out Sunday evening to Muddy Bay (MCVL Muddy Bay) and shrimped last 2 hours of rising tide and got another 1/4 cooler. Sunday night was like a miracle, very calm conditions. That didnt last long, 2am that night wind machine turned back on.

Monday we went out and wind was just as bad and we were beating and brused so we just went back to creek and fished a while.

One thing is for sure; all season Cowpens/Cape Romain has had surprising clean water but now it looks like chocolate milk. Hopefully luck will turn around for short remainder of season for any of you braving cold and anyone who has not already given up on season.
Yes I know a lot of people are saying ‘why didnt you just buy some shrimp at the dock’. We had several newbies with us and they really wanted to see what shrimping was like AND we all had our wives back at the house wanting a shr

Muddy bay can be a bear for sure. I worry about my dad at times working his crab pots out there…and he has been out oystering the last week too…a skiff loaded with 20 plus bushels of oysters coming from the lighthouse side doesn’t make for a easy ride.
Glad you did get to go. This has been the worst year that I can remember for muddy and bulls bay area…and I hope…but don’t think we will see much better this year…but as they say…there’s always next year.
Curious…which house did you rent. I grew up in the villa and it will always be "home " to me.
Did y’all eat at tw graham or buckshots?
If you did…remember next time that there are coupons on restaurant .com. I got some half price ones Ex. 10.00 off of 20.00:… 20.00 off of 40.00. For 3.00 on there after entering the secret code. And they do not add tip in as it states they might.
