shrimping lights

What kind of lights does everybody use when shrimping at night? It’s going to be my first year giving it a go and I’m trying to set up the boat. Does a lot of light spook the shrimp? Thanks ~Dan

We shrimp Bulls Bay during the day time and still cooler out. Edisto shrimpers only at night. Try both and get a good GPS. Creeks eat boats at night and you can’t read the water.

light to see what you’re doing in the boat or lights for driving at night?

I use a LED headband-type light. When I’m standing in the bow, it puts out just enough light to see the reflective tape on the poles but doesn’t put much light in the water. I have a bunch of cheapo battery powered LED puck lights (the little round ones you can stick in closets, cabinets, etc) stuck around in the boat that are awesome for low-level deck lighting. You can get a pack of three for $10 (on sale) at Harbor Freight, they are by no means waterproof but mine actually still work after getting soaked a few times.

If you’re talking about lights to navigate, get a 12V hand-held spotlight. Can be had pretty cheap.

q-beam/mag light for nav, headlamps for running poles.

my headlamp also has a red LED that helps for culling/coolering shrimp after the run so i don’t blind captain if i look up. he’s always worried that i’ll be mistaken for the port side bow light if standing/throwing with the red on though…

a lot of people like to light up the night with 12v systems- i find it hard to even shrimp nearby them due to the distracting candlepower.
