Side Imaging Lowrance HDS Live 9

Which thru hull transducer did you go with Epres? I am looking to upgrade my unit I have the Garmin 740 which I bought in 2013 and the touch screen is starting to malfunction. 5 Years on the water I figure the time is coming.

I have the Garmin 94SV and love the sonar but really having a hard time with the side view. Nothing stands out like the photo above. Wish I can figure out if I am missing a correct setting or what I am missing. In this picture, I see what I would think is vegetation but very small. I would welcome help on learning this.
Thanks

MESSIN; I SEE A FEW POSSIBLE ISSUES THAT MIGHT BE GIVING YOU SOME PROBLEMS. TRY TO RE SET THE COLOR CONTRAST TO A DARKER COLOR . THE BRIGHT YELLOW ON YOUR SCREEN IMAGE WILL DROWN OUT MOST FISH TARGETS THAT USUSLLY SHOW UP AS WHITE AND WON’T STAND OUT IN THE YELLOW VERY WELL…SECONDLY ONCE YOU’RE IN THE AREA YOU WANT TO FISH GO TO A SINGLE VIEW SCREEN INSTEAD OF SPLIT SCREEN , SPLITTING THE SCREEN COMPRESSES THE IMAGE BY 50% MAKING EVERYTHING SMALLER… THIRDLY , THE WATER COLUMN
IS 20+ FT DEEP AND 95 FT SIDE SCAN , TRY SHALLOWER , SAY 10-12 FT DEEP AND 30-40 FT SCAN UNTIL YOU GET FAMILIAR AND COMFORTABLE WITH WHAT YOU SEE… IF YOU WANT SHOOT ME A PM IF YOU HAVE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS…

Thanks for the suggestions and I will try these adjustments this weekend. I didn’t realize that posted upside down. I do use the side view by itself when I’m off shore at the reefs mostly but still have a problem understanding some of it. I think cutting down the distance as you suggested may help and will try that as well. I’ll let you know. Thank you for your help and time. Much appreciated

Hookem CHS: I have a transom mounted 3in1 transducer. I haven’t seen a thru-hull side imaging sonar. My unit can source from 2 different transducers if I wanted to do that.

DON’T KNOW WHAT OR IF GARMINS OFFER A THRU HULL TRANS… MINE IS A H-BIRD
XPTH-9-HDSI ; H-BIRD SELLS EM FOR 199.00 ; GOOGLE H-BIRD AND SEE IF THEY CAN BE INTERCHANGED…

Concerning image clarity: what I have learned is the transducer must be level while the boat is moving 3mph. Also it needs to see each side without obstruction, and no water turbulence

CAN’T ARGUE WITH ANY OF THAT , I KNOW SINCE I INSTALLED MY THRU HULL THE IMAGE IS CRYSTAL CLEAR. MY RIDE HAS A FLAT LEVEL AREA CENTER LINE OF THE HULL IN FRONT OF THE MOTOR FOOT . I NEVER RUN SIDE IMAGE FASTER THAN A WALK BUT DOWN IMAGE IS CLEAR AT ANY SPEED I CHOOSE

Ok I no longer feel like and idiot. I have the garmin 72SV and this thing was driving me crazy for quite awhile and now I feel better and for fish location I only get the sound of fish present but don’t know what I’m seeing. Either way I’m still catching fish

This tech is a must have for me. I mounted the TotalScan to my trolling motor and use it to locate fish from pier to pier. I simply turn the motor toward the pier I want to scan.

Nice! Great images and resolution. Been a Lowrance guy for years and currently Run an HDS12 Gen 3 on my rig now and am adding a 9 to the bow for vertical fishing which I’ll do nearshore and for bass over brush piles etc. SI is amazing to those willing to make the investment in to how to use it. It opens up a whole different level of information!!

Chuck d: I can’t wait to use mine Bass fishing! I might be able to pull something out of Goose Creek R for once! Lowrance is for sure the best sonar I have had. Humming bird is good too but not as easy to navigate. Ray marine is good for off shore but not inshore. Lowrance makes everything soo easy. I’m a Lowrance guy now for sure.

I have been looking at the hummingbird helix 9 chirp mega si+ gps g3p.
It has peak to peak power output of 8000 watts and power output RMS of 1000 watts.
How does the lowrance hds live 9 compare to these outputs?

Misslily, I have no idea of the technical specifics maybe someone else does?

I RUN A H-BIRD SI , I DON’T GET WRAPPED WITH ALL THE TECH JARGON AND NUMBERS , ALL I CAN SAY IS IT WORKS FOR ME AND WOULD BUY ANOTHER IF THE NEED ARISES…:smiley::smiley:

Miss Lillie, I have been looking at replacement down view, side view, etc sounders. Looks like 1000 watts RMS is kind of standard. The thing I don’t understand is the transducers. Most of them only say 500 watts RMS. Not sure if their max through put is only 500 watts or if that is all the transducer can handle. Can’t find any good technical information.

You folks have got me excited. I have a new (used) boat that has a Simrad NSS EV02 device. I have never really learned to use it properly but I think its Structure Scan feature might just be a side imaging capability. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks

I have the Garmin 74SV with a transom mounted transducer. I have the same issue as Messin. I hope to make it out this Saturday and will try gail wins’ suggestions.

Messin,

Did you make it out and try the settings that gail wins suggested?

I learned to use side scan on our upstate lakes. I have photos of areas when the water was down 20-30ft. With the lakes full and the side scan I then went to these areas and compared the photos to what I was seeing on screen. I would image you could create your own class room at the beach with the tidal changes. No it may not be 20ft of change but go to an area at dead low tides, and area with dock pilings and/or other stuff that is under water at high tide. Then just do the same, photo vs. screen
