Sig Hanson

Is the man. He makes the most of catch shares…ha ha…Is there even a rec season for the crabs they go after…?

He’s my favorite skipper.

Sig ought to quit smoking, those cancer sticks will lead to a shortened, miserable life.

However , he is a fine boat captain.

My sister lives in Seattle and flew to Charleston about a month ago - he was on her leg from SEA-JFK. He originally caught her eye when he was fighting with the TSA people about having to remove his shoes. Then he ended up sitting just a few rows up from her. She said he was very nice and posing for pictures with people on the plane (she got several), but that he raised T-total hell with the TSA people, the flight attendants and everyone in between. And my sister, who has quite the mouth on her, said she’s never heard such filthy language. But she said it was the most enjoyable flight she’s ever had.

You know, there are a lot of posers in this world but those captains on Deadliest Catch are the real deal. I get the feeling they don’t give a d’’’’ if the camera is there or not. What you see is what you get. Andy Hilstrand basically disowned his brother’s son right there. Sig basically told Edgar that Sig would always be the captain and tough you know what if he didn’t like it. Those are tough dudes. I admire them for it to a certain degree. Certainly not saints but they are authentic.

This is true. I met John Hilstrand a few years ago at Lowes Motor Speedway before the race on Pit Road. He looked EXACTLY like he does on the show. He had a cancer stick hanging from his mouth. I had my two boys with me at the time and I asked if we could get a photo with him. He said “sure.” As we were posing, he said “FU%$, let me take this cigarette out of my mouth!” Luckily my kids were too star-struck to have heard or even paid attention to what he said! HA! He put the cig on the ground, snap, picked it back up and right back in his mouth, said thank you, and walked away. It was hilarious!

Wild Bill is also very true to character. He is often found at outdoor trade shows, events, etc…awesome guy, hands down my favorite to watch on DC…

As far as Captain’s go I liked Phil Harris! Who could ever forget the Crab Farts! Deck hands, I have to go with Freddy the Wild Man!

The first season of deadliest catch (back when discovery wasnt making **** up like dinosaur sharks and fugging mermaids) was a legit reality show. Think it was back before that fishery turned to catch shares and it was still derby fishing. Every one of those deck hands were tweaked on amphetamines and awake for 8 straight days.

Would it surprise you to know that the most sought after crab comes from a place known as Labrador area 31 Canadian - east coast.

And what kind of crab is that:question:

They aren’t still tweaking. …??..ha ha…Matt…you going Saturday. .?

The same opilio snow crab they catch in Alaska is all the way around the north polar ocean

So what makes it the most sought after:question: King Crab cost more!

Google Newfoundland -Labrador opilio snow crab. They OWN 80% of the US market. Much of their crab is caught by larger vessels that process and pack the crab on board. Also, since the Canadian crab is not over regulated by NOAA or a fishery management council , The price is usually much better. Also that part of Canadian waters is much closer to the major US markets. Distance is money , and regulation drives up prices. Go to your local seafood market and check out the $27.00 per lb retail red snapper!

Haha, I think they’ve cleaned up some. We’re playing with the idea of leaving early early and heading back to the house by noon. Waiting to see if this forecast will shore up tomorrow. You guys?

The richest person in Dutch isn’t a fisherman or a seafood company owner, it’s the local drug dealer.

I’d like to know the life expectancy of a crabber. Stay up 6 straight days and smoke 4 packs a day. I bet it trims 10 years off average life expectancy. The toughest guy is on Keith Colburn’s crew. His name escapes me but he is the little Filipino guy (maybe Filipino not sure). He gets hurt every year…Wraps it up and back to work.

Look at what happened to the skipper of the Cornelia Marie. I can’t imagine a great life expectancy living like that.

I think you are talking about Freddy. Samoan I believe. I saw him jump into the water on one episode in nothing but a pair of underwear to try to tie a rope around a dead walrus.

No...It is Lenny. Freddy is like 6ft 2 220...Lenny is probably 5ft 8in and 160 lbs. Was having a night shift brain fart. Lenny gets his finger smashed and he just wraps it up and back to work. My wife and I were watching the show the other day. She said " I wonder what Lenny is going to get hurt by this year?" Dude always gets nailed by something and just keeps on going.
