Hit the beach today at low to try to hook some of the small blacktips I have seen cruising in the surf. I saw a few at first but the sun wasn’t out so they were too close and spooked before I could hook any. Waded out to fish the trough behind the first bar and picked up a couple trout on a rattling mullet fly. Kept one of the trout for dinner and put it on a stringer and continued fishing. Within 10 minutes I had 4 blacktips aggressivly swimming around me and my dinner in less than knee deep water. I put the wire trace and heavy fly back on and started casting to them. About the 4th cast I hooked the wrong one, too big. He was less than 2 rodlengths away when I watched him crush the fly. He was at least 4’ and took 3/4 spool of 30lb. gelspun backing (spool has 400 yds) in less than a minute. I gained all the backing back only to have him take all but the last dozen wraps on the spool at which point I grabbed the spool and straightened the hook. The last 1/4 spool had disappeared with the drag screwed all the way down and the rod pointed straight at the fish. This is the 3rd one I have hooked (first with wire trace) in the past 2 weeks and I have yet to land one. I have sight casted to redfish, bonefish, barracuda, dolphin and reefdonkies and have never had them peel line like these sharks. I think I have found my new favorite sightfishing.

That sounds awesome. If you ever need some company, let me know. Where are you fishing…Charleston?
I landed a big bonnethead last year and it whooped my azz!

You’re a reef donkey.
That sounds incredible. I’d like to give it a try.
That sounds pretty daggum awesome. Good thinking grabbing the spool like that. Glad the hook straightend out. Would have really sucked to have lost all of that line and backing.

HOW 'BOUT THEM DAWGS!!!
That sounds like some crazy sight fishing!! What size rod were you using?? I bet that would scare some tourists if you were at a beach. If you ever want some company sight fishing for black tips sounds like a blast.
Very nice dude good story. I need to get back out there with that I had a blast that one time with that. I want to explore that place more with ya. Good to hear from ya and read your report.

I was using an 8wt. probably should have had my 10wt. but that is a Korea special (TFO) and is kinda clunky for all day casting not bad for a few dozen casts but it will hurt you after a few hundred.
Hey Jeremy long time. This was on the ocean side North beach on Seabrook not even where we were before. I went back out there one night last week and caught a few flouder and bass but nothing special. It has shifted around alot and now isn’t quite as good as last year. The other 2 sharks I hooked were off the beach at Kiawah right in the breakers. I am leaving Wed. to fish a king tourney in G.Town but maybe next week we can get out.

What kind of fly? Would a large Clouser or Deciever work?

Will do Jeremy…My time on the water has been short to say the least! I have fished maybe 3 times in the past 10 weeks with the new baby.
I went Friday PM to check on some new flats, backed the boat down and couldn’t find my key! I dunno…baby brain I guess but I still haven’t found it!
I’ll be in touch…

You SOB. That thing is sweet. I really don’t think there is a prettier mid-size center console than an old seacraft. It is a timeless hull. It will be nice for those windy days out on the broad. I’m sure we could run it to those flats we walked last summer. What are you going to power it with or does it already have an engine? Also let me know when the next good tides are down youre way and I’ll make an afternoon run.
Bridger, I am looking and believe I just found a 2006 150 OptiMax w/ very low hours and warranty.
I haven’t checked the tides to see when the next ones are but I got the bug! Nothing this weekend but I will check on it and we will schedule something soon.

Look forward to it. Just call me when it’s right. Looks like there may be some good ones after the fourth.
