My boat insurance is through Progressive. I got an email about “Sign-and-Glide” coverage. It sounds basically like BoatUS or SeaTow, but it’s only a $40/year rider on my existing coverage. Does anybody else have this and have any opinion on it? Sounds like a good deal, but I am a skeptic.
I have allstate and I purchased the rider that included water. I was towed in from about the last canister in 2008 and Allstate reimbursed me for the whole tow (900), but i took them 3 weeks to reimburse me. You pay the tow company and you submit the cliam then your insurance compnay determines if it’s covered.
After that year, I just switched over to Sea Tow and have been satisfied with there service. I’ve also used BoatUS - also great customer service. if your fishing offshore you jsut need tow service coverage.
Not really answering your question, but I just dropped progressive, I got them originally for convenience. I got a quote from Strickland last week, they wrote me a Traveler?s policy (which is better company) and it saved me about 40%. The policy was more comprehensive when it came to liability as well. Not that your unhappy with progressive, but you can prob get a better policy and support some local business as well. And I am sure the tow rider is available through several carriers if it?s important to you. But like mullet said, any tows probably have to be ?considered? by the insurance company and deemed a covered claim. SeaTow or Boat USA membership is a service you pay for, no questions asked if you need a tow in.
I got my Progessive policy through Strickland. They gave me 3 different options if I recall and Progressive was the best value. Progressive is saying this new Sign and Glide coverage is like BoatUS or Seatow because you don’t have to pay the towboat captain and wait for reimbursement like you used to (like Mullet Man did). They take care of it directly.
10-4, if it sounds like the same thing $40 is a better deal for sure.
I wonder if they got a contract with boat us or seatow? If progressive calls Bob’s bagels & boat towing it might not be such a great deal. It may take 12 hours for them to get you.
If it is a reputable company they call then it sounds like a good deal. It’s like saving 110$ a year since you would not need seatow or boat us.
My current policy is with AIG/Strickland because they were more reasonable on the add ons like electronics and gear.

That’s a good point. I could call them and ask who their boat towing company is. Definitely don’t want Bob’s Bagels! I’ll do some digging and report back.
TowBoat US will not participate in “sign and Glide”. YOU will pay Non Member “Fee for Service Rates”
up front. You will also NOT be eligible for priority service. ALL members will be serviced before Nonmember calls. Don’t forget that, come renewal time you will have a claim against you. Claims usually equal rate increase. There are many benefits beyond just towing. Check out www.TowBoatcharleston.com and see for yourself

The service I have received from Towboat is too good to let go. I trust them, Progressive not so much. If TB is not participating, you have to wonder who else may not. I also boat in FL, there are red boats everywhere down there. I’ll pay a little extra to go with something that is proven.

Captain Little,
Why wouldn’t you participate? The insurance company is paying you. Why does it matter if it’s a BoatUS member or someone else if they both pay you? Forgive the ignorance, I’m just trying to edumucate myself. Thank you.
TowBoat US has the largest fleet of towers in the country. Our members make us the largest association of recreational boaters in the nation. It is our members who enable us to provide the most value and more benefits than any other towing program. Many companies claim to offer similar value and service but none can. If we allow others the privileges and benefits that only a TowBoat US membership provides then we have done our members a disservice. If we lose member loyalty the entire system fails and there will be no towers to service anyone member or non. More than one company has promised “professional relationship with Boat US” as they recognize the value and brand that is TowBoat US, however it is a dishonest attempt to generate revenue. Our national association has made this very clear to these companies yet they still perpetuate the false claims in an attempt to generate more revenues. The old saying is true…membership has it’s privileges! This is a topic that can only be brushed over in a thread but I will be more than happy to discuss further via phone if anyone desires.

Well said Capt. Steve. If you want guaranteed quality service on the water, stick with a company that does it everyday.

Thanks for the explanation Captain. I understand now. Makes sense.
Well said Steve. Sea Tow will not be participating in ‘Sign and Glide’. We get calls all the time…I collect the person’s location, problem, info; and then ask for their member number with the response, “I have Sea Tow through Progressive.” Their agents are actually telling their customers they get a Sea Tow membership with their insurance policy. Now they have ‘Sign and Glide’…but they don’t have any tow boats.
I can tell you that Sea Tow Georgetown tows very few non-members, but when we do, we require a membership be purchased(which will be activated after the boat is in working order). So you’re going to have to have a membership anyway, might as well sign up ahead of time. Our non-member rates are very high in order to ensure the best possible service for our members, because it takes our assets away from members. Members always receive priority.
Finally, most of the time INSURANCE TOWING RIDER CUSTOMERS DECLINE SERVICE BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT TO PAY US, SUBMIT A CLAIM, AND WAIT TO GET REIMBURSED. So all that ‘towing coverage’ becomes useless, and the insurance companies make out like bandits.

Wow, without Sea Tow or Towboat US, it looks like Bob’s Bagels is going to pick up all that tow business. Go Bob!
