does anybody use a silverside/anchovy pattern for trout. do you have any names/patterns. we are seeing the trout smack them on the surface. is that how you work the fly?
i went to a seminar and that is supposedly the main food up here this time of year.
i looked at a couple online. silver mylar tube over hook. bucktail with herl over top. stick on eyes.
this looks like it might be a good candidate for a tube. thanx for your help. i may put this in the next swap.

stopped by the west ashley CA. Josh showed me a few patterns. some real nice gummy heads and capt rays–pretty much all synthetics. im partial to hair so i think im gonna stick with mountain goat and deer or sheep over some flash. im liking the look of the barred hackles for lateral lines. capt rays eyes look real good so i may emulate a little. Josh works them on top and with a sinking line and finds them effective with trout. some of the clousers would be good imitations too but im kinda tired of tying them.
also picked up a bob pop shrimp and some wabbit stuff. may try the shrimp on a float n fly. looks like a nice size.
didnt make it by MM to pick his head as planned, but thanks for your help fellas. stop by when you pass Pawleys.
time to stick my head in a vice and turn some pre-proto-preliminary-practice editions. its a tuff crowd out there

Check out some of the north east False Albacore patterns used throughout NC as well as some of the smaller snook flies used in FL. Just about anything small & white that has some flash should get you bit, just keep is the profile small and dressing lean.
You may want to check out The Gummy Minnow, which comes in 2 different sizes, personally I perfer the larger over the smaller but when they are on really tiny bait the smaller one will get you bit when they won’t take the larger. It’s also been my personal experience that it’s much easier to buy them than tie them fortunately, they last forever, if fact they’re practically indestructible. There is another good minnow type bait fish pattern that’s called The Mush Mouth, designd by David Skok. This is a NE synthetic that’s also highly effective. Finally you have the Snook patterns of FL of which there’s a very versital fly at the top of the Mangrove Fly Fishers link contained in some of the more recent fly swap threads and links. If you like naturals, consider small Zonkers or a Norm’s Crystal Shiminnow which has a Bou tail and another of the smaller Snook Flies discussed in FL Sportsman Magazine which is another good source for SW fly ideas. You can also tie a Zonker Strip for a tail then wrap eitehr cross cut bunny for a fuller fly or Estaz and Crystal Chenille for you body size of choice then weight according, just remember if you want the hook to ride in the downward position, you have to invert the eyes under the hook shank for the fly vs on the top like a Clouser if you want the fly to come through the water column correctly. I’ve caught a ton of fresh and saltwater fish that love to chew on bait fish on all of the above. While the action is a little better with some of the natural/synthetic blends the all synthetics will hold up a lot better and you’ll spend less time changing flies when they get garbaged or malled.
jmb,I agree wholeheartedly about the sili skin and the gummys. I nearly threw my desk stool out the window in utter frustration. We used them in AK for prespawn silvers and…well, Ive never seen a reaction like that to any fly. Ive been trying to get them right since but they always end up screwy and sideways, the little sheets are so expensive too…arggh:angry:
I totally agree…some flies are much better bought than tied, you need the patience of Job to make a good one tht you can use. While they are a bit pricy, them seem to last a very long time!
thanks for the input. i dont want to get into the definition of a fly but i dont really want to pour plastic myself either. ive been tinkering with some materials and i should have a recipe i can live with by next week. i think thats what a swap is all about. getting a little ■■■■■■■■ from other guys and trying new stuff. i found some smaller diameter silver cord that i think will work better for the side line than what i have been trying.
time and the group will tell.
sorry we only got 9 entries. may have been the thread name although maybe everybody else reads them all too.

You can also go with a smaller braid type material and wrapped the body like you would for a glass minnow pattern that’s tied with mono. Just substitute the sparkle braid for the mono for a great looking smaller profile minnow type body.
The other option is to use something like the larger diameter Flex Cord if you want to add a rattle or go for a larger profile fly. Let me know what you come up with. I’m always looking for new and different patterns.
The other thing that you may want to play around with is to invert the hook like you would for a bend back or better yet use one of the smaller fresh or saltwater soft plastic hooks for a more weedless design.
Just watch how and where you place your materials in order for the hook to ride correctly as well as the fly to come throught the water right. Owner has some good black nickel hooks on the market that work well. Unfortunately, they are a bit pricy and I’ve not found the hook any smaller than a 1/0 so far so you’ll end up with a fairly large profile fly which isn’t too bad if your going for a Shad, Manhaden, Pilchard, Mackerel or Mullet look. I’ve just not found the right type hook to do the Anchovies, Sardines and Glass or Mud Minnows for this type of set up.
You can also add a foam popper or slider head to the front of the bait and you’ve got a pretty effective Popper or Slider. If you tie on a small foam strip and you’ve got a great Gartside Gurgler.
