Simrad vs. Garmin

Must replace 12" Simrad evo 2 (stolen), and will consider 12" Garmin (7612 or 8212) touch-screen. I have been on a boat with the Gamrin, and it was fast and clear. But I am not sure if there are grounds to switch.

Had some issues with Simrad initially, but got them worked out. The Simrad knob is handy for adjustments. Does not hold bottom reading if running fast, but that may be transducer; have Airmar B75M, through-hull. It appears to me more boats are using Garmin now, around Charleston. Opinions on Hulltruth appear divided with usual Ford vs. Chevrolet slants.

Is anyone familiar with both? What has been your experience with either?

Personally, Garmin seems more user friendly. I actually have both on a boat and just had the Simrad installed to replace an old furuno bottom machine. We also got the BSM-3 chirp module to go with the EVO2 screen. I hadn’t really messed with the Simrad much yet but it seems a little more involved and will take some getting use to. I use the Garmin 5212 for navigation and the simrad as a back-up. I don’t think you could go wrong with either.

have used both evo2 and garmin… i went with evo2 myself… allot of people have mentioned holding bottom but i think its more transducer choice than cpu/processor on the units. seems the thru hull guys with good transducers dont have issues the transom ount guys seem to… big difference in price between the 2… i run a tm150 with structure scan at 35 sog i have had 0 issue in 100 ft of water but thats not fast just where im at…

the navionics plat+ map on simrad with 3d option is sick… but its a 3rd party thing…

seems the simrads have some temp issues as well but thats in then ext update whenever that hits the public… some walk arounds are on tht

i liked the ease of garmin and it seems a bit more simple

its your money and have used the simrad stuff you know the ins and outs… its your money buy what makes you happy.
