single or tandem

Looking for opinions on single vs double axels. Probably need a new trailer for a 20 ft BW Outrage. Single, double ? Buy new or have Trailer Shop rebuild the old? Comments or suggestions please.

You have to get one, that will handle the GVW of the boat plus the trailor! Remember to add the weight of fuel and all your gear! That should be your guide.

i prefer a double axle… just for that fact that if you blow out a hub or tire, you can limp home. (assuming you’re close)

I had a tandem trailer for a bowrider, and I had a couple of tight turns to maneuver my boat at the ramp, and also into my the boat shed. I was constantly pulling off the bead on the front tire as I turned. I had to be very careful not to turn sharp.

My next trailer was a single axle for a KW 196BR. Worked great, no problems. So when I ordered my KW 210 BR, I requested a single axle BUT it showed up with a tandem. They agreed to change it out later, but I watched them maneuver the boat and trailer around the lot, and it did fine. I decided to keep the tandem, and have had no problems. Same boat shed, same ramp.

Based on my (long-winded) experience, I think the tandems pull better, support the load better, but, depending on the trailer, may have an issue if you have to turn it in tight quarters.

Thanks for the input.

tandem pulls better
single is much more manueverable
make sure you arent to close to max load
you dont want a 3000# boat on a 3000# trailer

RLS: They are right about a tandem axel being tough to turn in tight turns! I broke a whole hub and backing plate, brake disk and all off an axel once. It broke the welds at the axel housing! I would have much prefered that it tore the tread off the tire!

How far are you planning on pulling it? Doubles work better for the long haul, like from the upstate. or pulling it on the intrstate at 70 mph or better
