Sirius Weather

How well does the Sirius weather work? Which service level do you have? Can you see thunderstorms overlaid on chart? Is it like radar, more info or less info?

The top level does surface temps but looks too pricey for me. …maybe $5-600 per year.

My understanding is you can buy and cancel when you want. Might be more cost effective if you only use it part of the year.

Makes sense.

For Garmin I think the Sirius antennae is maybe $900 versus $2,000 for radar. But then with radar there is no monthly fee, and you can see other vessels, stationary objects, etc.

Probably more to it; I’m just trying to understand. The value in avoiding a severe thunder storm could be big.

Save yourself some $$$$. On your smartphone. download for free “Raindar” or the “Unoffical NOAA Weather” app. Both have radar imaging with storm tracks for free. Get a cheap AM radio, turn it on, when you hear the crackle thru the speaker, run for cover, run for a bridge or keep a weather eye, lighting is within 5 miles or less.

Does everyone know that graphite fishing rods are a better lightning conductor than golf clubs…[:0]

Eric, I have some weather radar apps now, but will look at those you mentioned. However my concern is when we are offshore and far out of cell tower range. Would it work there?

My Verizon cellphone here in Cape May NJ works to 26 miles offshore, with spotty coverage after that.

Anything beyond 15 miles, yes Sirrus satellite or Delorme Spot Weather satellite subscription will give you coverage. On friends boat who has it, IMHO its works then it doesn’t work. His antennna has clear view of the sky. Remember one trip comming back thru the backbay, the sky was black and we couldn’t get data on the screen. Very frustrating. Very similar to satellite radio where traveling has alot of bridges to go underneath. And you pay money for this…The data on the screen is very similar to the cellphone radar apps. The strenght of the storm is the color, worse the storm you see red. Lightning symbols, hail, etc. are the same.

Roff’s satellite water temp maps is working on a cheaper weather coverage, via very small satellite dome reciver. Its in the beta testing stage now. Look to Roff’s webpage for more info.
