Put about 20 live shrimp in the bait well today, caught 15 skate. Couldn’t keep them off it! Hit several locations up the Wando. Skate are slamming the shrimp. Saw lots of big mullet, but couldn’t get any in the net.

Have you ever fished for trout in those big schools of mullet?

Yeah, I was throwing zman at them all day, not even a nibble. Tried about 6 colors.
shrimp are delicious candy for sting rays…it’s tough to keep from catching them when the water gets this warm. Last weekend, that’s all we caught as well.

If you saw my post, “Mess of Trout,” look at those two photos of the trout we caught. All were caught while wading and fishing schools of big mullet. It seemed like on every cast, we’d foul hook a mullet or catch a trout. We figured the trout were under those schools of mullet. Water was 3-4’ deep. I lost count of the mullet that actually bit my jig.
Next big trout smackdown is going to be June 7-11. Again, we’ll go look for the big schools of mullet. Photos to follow.

Ill switch to a cajun thunder float to get it off the bottom when the skates are thick like that. Those things drive me nuts but its better than catching nothing all day!
