Skeg protectors

Any one have any opinions on skeg protectors? Have had several nicks and gaughes on the skeg from drifting over shallow structure. Haven’t seen too many of them on boats.

I’ve seen some rigs on here that had them. They do keep the skeg looking nice and can be replaced if necessary. I think it was Graham Hagemeyer at SouthernTail Charters that had one on his rig, and I think it increased its resale value when he upgraded boats. Haven’t heard from him in a while on this forum.

I’ve got one on my Mercury. Stainless Steel. I have not seen any issue with it. Only complaint is that it is shiny SS on a black engine. Kinda looks odd. Took some good spray paint to it and cant even tell it is there, unless looking for it.

Have had both SS and plastic! Would defently go with the SS. I went with them because I broke the skeg!

I don’t like them especially the SS ones. The skeg is there to help with turning, but it is also there for protection. It is there to break just like the hub is inserted in the prop to spin free when you hit something. When the skeg and hub brakes it helps cause less damage to the gut of the lower unit. Now if you put a SS skeg protector on and forget to trim up you engine when you trailer you will rip off the lower unit or worse where as if you did not do the the skeg would have just broke. Hope that makes sense.
