Skunked at the Hatchery

Went out for the top water bass bite Sunday morning with my “baby” brother. We put the boat in the water Saturday evening and launched from the lake house before sunrise. We trolled around behind the house for about 20 minutes with no bites and then ran over to the hatchery. We worked 20’ to 1’ of water in both locations, around open areas and structure.

The wind was a lot worse than the weatherman had predicted. The ride over there wasn’t too bad, but we got a little wet on the ride back. My brother had about a 12" bass follow his plug from a tree to the boat twice, but it wouldn’t bite. It followed it to the boat and went right back to the tree twice. I’ve never seen that before.

Around 8:30 it got started getting really windy, so we headed back.

We threw top water spooks, jitterbugs, buzz baits, and spinner baits with no takers. Water temp out in the deeper water was around 85 degrees. Water temp in 4’ and less was around 90 degrees! I’m guessing most of the fish are deeper right now with the heat being so oppressive.

It was a beautiful morning, and it was good to get back to my Moultrie roots.

After fishing we spent the next few hours replacing the bunks and carpet on my boat trailer. By noon we were done and it was hot as s***! I’m glad I got that done, because two of the bunks were really starting to come apart. I couldn’t tell that with the carpet over them. Just something to think about if it’s been a while on your rig.

Yeah the Hatchery can be a bear this time of year, but sometimes you can do decent for catfish if you get outside the ditch/stump pond area and fish up and down the dikes, even in the middle of the day. Not sure about this year, it’s been pretty bad.
