ok, today was a learning experience, first time taking my 5 year old grandson fishing, so we mostly trolled and untangled his line, but not even a good bite, i did explore some feeder creeks and found places i had never seen, but all in all it was fun watching my grandson try to cast an open face spinning reel for the first time,(now you know why we trolled all day) and it could have been worse, we came back in to Bushy Park Landing at low tide and i did as i was instructed by members of this forum, in my jon boat go in planned out right up to the ramp, and i did with no problems, not so much for the Big Bass Boat that tried to follow me in, about mid way he stopped and tried to turn around, too late,[:0] the pluff mud flew for 15 min and he barely moved i could not have went back and stopped where he was to rescue his wife or girlfriend because i would have been stuck as well…all i could do was bid them a farewell and as i was driving off i thought that could have been me sitting there in 8 inches of water for the next two hours had i not read how to deal with Bushy Park at low tide, thanks again guys:smiley:
Excuse me for replying to you as paintball. I’ll bet you still had a blast with the grand son. That’s when you anchore down with some cut mullet or shimp and have him hold on to that rod.Need to keep the reading glasses on. Theres nothing one can do when he or she sees a fellow fishermen stuck at bushy. You have to run all the way in or hang out in the pluff for a few hours as noted. That place is terrible on low tides and flood tides make it even worse. I watch my tides closely if i’m planning on coming out the water on the out going tides

You can call me what you like as long as you call me, i did have a blast with the grandson and i will take your advise to get some live bait or mullet to bob with next time, i did feel bad for the guy and girl in the bass boat, and you are right there was nothing i could do… lessons learned, i’ll keep an eye out for Poochee and come over to say hi, i will be in a 16 ft green jon boat G3 side console, but i will not cut you off or try to fish your spot lol

I have laughed all day about the 500 “But why Pap paw” questions , everything from why are we going so slow, are the fish tired ? why won’t the fish wake up and eat, to just what do the fish drink, and if i can’t see the fish how can they see me. why do all these sticks like my hook, why is there two motors on the boat is the little one on the front to back up with? and my favorite, if i am big enough to fish then why can’t i drive the boat? i have no response to that

The more you take him, the better it will get. The first time I took my son fishing, before we got out to the river he was telling me he wanted to got home.
I always take lots of snacks, and the new thing my son does is throw chips in the water and catch the minnows with a dip net when they come up to eat them. They aren’t the big mud minnows that we use for bait, but he has fun and is pretty quiet and still when he’s waiting on them to “take the bait”. He also catches the mud minnows in the live well when I’m re-baiting our hooks.
Some people take electronic games to keep kids busy. That’s fine, but the only thing I had to keep me busy when I was a kid was snacks, my fishing pole, and the cricket cage. (I also had my little brother to fight with. )
I love the “But why” questions!

My boy would play all day with a bucket of minnows, or even fiddlers (of course, they “bite”). Seems like yesterday for me but my boys are now 14 and 17. Couldn’t tell from your post whether or not you are a Bushy “regular” but fishing brackish water is so fun? you never know what you’ll get!
i just bought a boat i can use in the feeder creeks and brackish water to fish, i live in goose creek but for the last year have not been able to put my bigger boat in at bushy park, so i am learning a different way of fishing, up to this point i have fished mostly off shore , but that has gotten to expensive and too much time, so that is why i bought the 16 ft jon boat

It gets better just stick with it. I fish offshore on the “MISSTRESS” a family owned 26’ Glacier Bay and I love that experience of trolling (exspecially when we hit tunas) and bottom bumping. I just enjoy the saltwater fishing.

A liveable full of bait will keep my 4 year old daughter entertained for hours. Last time I took her, she killed all of the mullet in the first hour! Mud minnows fair much better. I think you can let one of them drag behind the boat on the trailer and It’ll still be alive when you get home.
Any way, I love spending time on the water with her and she makes an awesome bait getter and net man. This year she netted a 29" red for me and i’ll never forget that!
