I spent Saturday working the Highway 17 bridge for Sheepshead with fiddler crabs from my 14’ Sit In. I got completely skunked and so did everyone else around me and they looked as confused as I did because I thought that area held fish. I did have a great paddle around the harbor until the wind and boat traffic picked up. At one point I got too distracted with trying to catch a large pinfish that had been stealing all of my bait and I didn’t notice that the harbor turned from smooth to very rough with large waves for a kayak. Crossing the harbor near the marina with all of the boat traffic sucked but it was fun now that I have survived. The paddle in was a great workout with the headwind and I certainly can feel it in my shoulders.
Does anyone know what areas I should be looking for sheepshead this time of year in a Kayak or would anyone who knows how to catch these bandits feel like joining me next Saturday? Any area near Charleston.
Thanks.

Shepperding in a yak sounds like fun… I am clueless when it comes to them though… I have tried time and time again and the only sheepshead I have ever caught have been by mistake in a cast net…
lemme know where you plan on going and I’ll try and make it… sounds like a trip for fiddler hunting before hand for me though…
Paddle faster boys… I hear banjo music!

I spent yesterday morning working docks and ledges on the ICW between Pitt st and the Ben Sawyer bridge. Got skunked too:frowning_face:
The theme for the day yesterday was either paddle directly into the sun or directly into the wind. I spent a little time in the harbor but wind, waves and boat traffic made me want to find more comfortable waters.
I don’t have any advice on sheepies, I only catch 'em by luck, never when I try to target the little thieves.

ive started to have a good amount of luck with sheeps when targeting them either with oysters or fiddlers. I know a few inshore places that hold some big sheeps. these are not in open water either so the threat of harbor-like waves is not a concern
strip…strip…FISH ON!
Glad to hear that you are up for the trip NikonJedi and you are welcome to join as well Too Busy unless of course you feel obligated to live up to your name. NikonJedi, just don’t make fun of my 5MP camera that I bought specifically for Kayak fishing. It cost me about $250 to learn what salt water does to a nice point and shoot digital camera.

I can only fish weekends and with the weather Saturday looks like our best bet. I had no luck on low tide and some people near me said the sheepshead fishing was better at high tide. If no one strongly disagrees with this then we can shoot for heading out a few hours prior to the noon high tide this Saturday and fishing on both ends of it. No need to get all muddy catching fiddlers either, Haddrells will sell half pints of them (40-60) for $5 and I have yet to need more than the one that I start the day with on my hook so I will have extras. We can plan to reschedule if Sunday’s bad weather comes early.
Is there any chance that flyfishn or any other members with some salt on them would like to share with us some areas to try or at least gift us with some solid advice? So far I have gotten lots of input on sheepshead fishing and it hasn’t translated into results as well as my efforts in redfishing and trouting. I am still very eager to get my first (but never the last) Charleston sheepshead and any good tips will be rewarded with some great pictures posted on this forum; especially if NikonJedi brings any of his photo gear. Does anyone else feel like joining this trip next Saturday? The details are still 90% up in the air but we might meet ~10:00am at an as yet undecided location in Charleston. I hope this next trip produces because if it doesn’t I may start getting crazy ideas like going out to the jetties.

I think I can swing Saturday. Weekends are always my best opportunity. I will get a few weekdays after work free in the not too distant future…Daughter will be heading off to camp, wife and son heading to NC to visit family.
That leaves little ole me with nothing to do but work, eat, sleep, and fish.
Now if I could just do something about the work part.

It will be great if you can make it out Too Busy. Sounds like we may have a nice trio heading out on Saturday. Now all we need to do is get the inside word on where we should go to target Sheepshead this time of year.

I’m not picky, sheepies, trout, reds, flatties… it doesn’t matter to me. Just show me some fish.
