Skunked v2 5-15

If misery does love company, leadenwahboy will be happy as the Fortunate Son joined the skunk party Monday. Fished most of the day in a nice blue water eddy In 500-700 feet but covered from 130 to 1000 during the day. Scattered weeds, lots of flyers, but no weedlines. Lots of boats out and a few dolphin were caught but seemed slow from the VHS chatter. Ran across this guy 60 miles out. 370 ft with a deck full of people headed to Charleston. Was the highlight of what turned out to be an $800 boat ride. Will try again tomorrow.

did not expect this from you. oh well. we’ll get em next time.

I dare not say it, but this seems to be panning out as one of the worst years on record for dolphin in SC. I know there have been a few boats that have “killed it”, but it’s just not the “norm” right now like it usually is.

I have to once again, support the skunk report.

Its just as helpful as any other, but people just won’t do it.

People want to be the “man”.

Its the facebook/twitter/instagram greatest hits of life mentality.

Fortunate Son, sorry for the skunk, but you are the man.

We were talking about that last night at dinner. May used to be brainless. Run out to 250 ft, put lines in and catch fish. Now I have SST charts, Sirius weather, etc. Maybe overthinking things and need to go old school.

We put 13 dolphin in the box and released a sail. The larger grass mats seemed to be the only thing holding fish.

Glad someone did well. Congrats on the sail.

Fortunate Son. Thanks for the report. My analysis on the situation

  1. Water moves. Fish move. The dolphin run mainly comes in waves of fish. They could have been 30 miles north or south of you rather than not here
  2. More big dolphin caught this year than any year I can remember
  3. WAY more people fish between here and the keys than did 10-20 years ago or whenever your best memories are which= more fish being caught
  4. Commercial longlines moved in to 300-600ft over the weekend which took a big hit on the school that was here
  5. Dolphin season usually starts strong and has lag periods or weeks scattered between now and mid june
  6. Fishing in general isn’t what it used to be due to population increase, cheap fuel, and above said technology advances in boat electronics

I have been dealing with nonstop boat problems and my hope to fish this week was shattered last evening with more motor issues after just getting back from the shop. $800 to go fishing isn’t cheap but still seems like you are the Fortunate Son to get out there so frequently.
Good Luck!

West wind. Fish are out deep but are definitely here.

Thanks for the info. Did not mean to come across as complaining. Spent the day on a beautiful ocean with my Dad, Son, and the once yearly trip for my wife drinking beer and listening to music. Hard to complain about that. Everyone gets a turn, yesterday was mine. Hopefully will get them tomorrow.

sounds like fun to me! was that the USCG Eagle tall ship? if so she is a thing of beauty…

I’ve never had a bad day on the water, regardless of what was or was not caught. Time spent with friends or family is time well spent. That being said, I know how frustrating it can be to get skunked and I am an inshore guy. To spend all the time and money it takes to fish offshore only to get skunked has to be that much more frustrating.

Who knows…we caught em in crappy greenish water a few weeks back. Thanks for the report. I wanna catch a half dozen and then change tactics for a Marlin…Teasers. …lures…horse hoos, and pitch baits.

Redstripe - that’s a healthy attitude - wish more had it.
I can only eat so much Mahi and then will start looking for a hot dog.

hate hearing these skunk reports…

But did enjoy staying down the creek from you all week. Enjoyed seeing your boat in and out, it’s beautiful.
