skunked

After about a week of success at various spots I’m feeling pretty invincible to the skunk, but my long lost friend has returned to my kayak with a vengence! Went out to plum island twice last week in the yak. First day, Wednesday, I watched the red pick up my crab and swim toward me with it in his mouth. I was using a circle hook so I knew “setting” the hook would do no good. The fish swims within a foot of the yak before he sees it, drops the crab and spooks the rest of the school. Missed 1 on artificial and then chased schools all day that wouldn’t bite. Next day I’m following this huge pod of 200+ fish but couldn’t get any takers on crab and artificials (missed 1 on crab and 1 on artificial). There was a john boat out there with a fella and two ladies who posted up and soaking baits (cut mullet) and they ended up with 9 reds in 4 hours. I don’t have the patience to soak baits when I can see the schools around me and my kayak isn’t very comfy either. Then friday, a friend of mine and I loaded up the yaks to copahee sound. weather sucked, got bit by a crab which is now infected, and got REALLY lost on the way in, pulled out the iphone and luckily it had the creeks on the maps app. Goin out tomorrow with my dad in the harbor to break this bad luck. Seems like everyone else is doing pretty well though

At least you are out there giving it your best shot. I have only yak fished a few times this year and really had some good experiences. I am not equipped for cold water yak fishing so had to put it away until spring. Buy some mud minnows and give that a shot, they have worked every time I have used them. I am not knowledgeable in the use of artificials so live/cut bait is really my only option.

Good luck

I chatted with 2 yakkers back there friday. Nothing said about directions. Saw 2 waayyyy hi n dri.
