skunked

hit the dam around 7am this morning with a friend. there were large whitecaps and lots of wind. went to the towers and only saw one fish caught in about 1 1/2 hrs. must have been around 10 boats there. headed to a cove to drift out of the wind. still nothing. buddy had to get back to go to work so we quit around 10. first time in a long, long time I have been skunked. not even a bite.I realize that I do not know a lot about the striper fishing but it is not rocket science to drop a line down along with everybody else.oh well; still enjoyed the morning.
oh; just as we were leaving naturally the wind died down.

Don’t feel bad … We only caught two … an 8-9# and the other not worth mentioning … Marked a bunch of fish but none were eating this morning …

On a better note, surface temps were 84 today … That’s down from 88-89 last weekend …

… it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish !!!

What a difference a day makes. Fished at the towers, first time in forever, with the soldiers yesterday. I know we saw fifty fish get caught. We caught three limits. Sent a young guy there this morning and nothing.

I went out with friend and fellow club member Wayne on Friday morning. The bite was almost non-existent. We did catch 4, but only 1 was decent-- a 23 inched. We fished until noon, marked a lot of fish, but could only manage 4 decent bites. Maybe it’s because I’m not getting out as much, but the bite seems off this summer.

I think the bite has been off a little this summer as well. BUT I have found if you go to your normal summer time spots and wait them out they will come and bite. Chum has been a real key this year. I usually chum when I can’t get them to bite but this year I have chummy as soon as I pull up to a spot and have actually went ahead and cut up chum while at the dock and actually toss it over board before the first rod goes in.

Does seem the size is also a little off as well. Last year we were hammering the 6-8# fish in the summer this year they are all 18-22". Don’t get me wrong I am loving seeing this size fish being caught instead of the bigger ones…just makes for a better winter.

Nightime has been decent. I’ve been trolling in the big water, mostly in the 50-60ft range. Getting a few 24" legit keepers but most smaller. Got lines in about 8:45 tonight and it looked good. Picked up 2 right away, so I went to trolling one rod and picked up another 2. Then went back to pulling both rods and haven’t had a bite in over an hour. Gonna hang it up.

edit: the weather was so nice and it was the first night since I started trolling recently that the wind wasn’t blowing, so I stayed till midnight without a bite. They just vanished.

We fished 50-60 of water the other night and had our 10 by 10:30, started fishing about 8:30. Hardly no fish on the screen when anchored up, but after the green light had been out for about 30 minutes, and bait showed up, they came in strong and never left. Over half of the fish were in the 6#-8# range. Nice quality fishing in a short period of time.

The bait we drew up were really small herring, about half the size of the bait we got from Richard.
