Slot tail bass

For the love of fishing for red drum. I cant seem to put my hands on slot reds. What or where is the deal? Can catch the 24"-36" ones but no keepers. I Fish cut bait or mm on fishfinder rigs along the grass line. Anys suggestions on what to do. Just want something other than trout or flounder… you know to release to the grease.
Thanks Bigred.

The ones I’ve caught this last month have been on live small finger mullet or live shrimp.

Hold on there a minute…your whining because you’re catching too many red fish that are ABOVE the slot??? sheeeesh! That’s like a megalottery winner whining about the taxes they have to pay!!

seriously…it’s probably a result of where you are fishing. In my limited experience, it seems that the big boys (girls) are usually in the same area and the slot reds are also found in the same area. There’s a dock we fish on the Stono, near some oyster banks, where we can catch reds. Every one of them seems to be under the slot. Then there’s a grassy island in Wadmallaw sound where we catch over slot reds. Doesn’t seem to matter what we use for bait or technique, more important is the area. IMHO!

Carolina rigs … drop the fish finder rigs

  1. the fact or state of having been affected by or gained knowledge through direct observation or participation

  2. that thing you get just moments after you needed it.

Last fall I had the same problem. I was giddy when I caught one that was 1/4" under the upper slot, was the first one in a while that was a keeper.

Anyone complaining about any tax is a legitimate whine :sunglasses:

Isn’t a fish-finder and Carolina about the same thing, other than the type of sinker (and the sliding swivel for the sinker)?
