Started with plans to fish near shore reefs for sheeps but once out on the ocean it was too nice to not run out. Made the run to the ledge. Water was 72-74 by the end of the day. High speed trolled for a good while with no hits at all. Finally while clearing lines the shotgun rod I was pulling a wahoo bomb style lure got hit right about at the boat… Salvaged what would’ve have otherwise been a slow day trolling.
Interesting thing is after we got regrouped getting that hoo in we made another couple passes back over the same area we had worked all day and where before it was dead on depth finder it was now lit up!! From 80 ft down to 200 marks all over.
Had one other first a brand new yo zuri maurader style bait wore through the 400 lb cable I had it rigged on. Never had that happen with any of the braid baits… Any suggestions to keep that from happening again? Have hear about it but it was a first for me.
Beautiful ocean today and a fast ride in/out

Ocean does look nice. Congrats on the wahoo. Making me want to give it a try.

I’m still trying to figure out how to keep those marauders from wearing through. I have one that’t nearly wore through the 400# cable from the last trip. Maybe 5’ of anchor chain?

Have you guys used those stainless steel thimbles in the loop on your wire?
I just ordered some solid ring MnMahnon snaps …after extensive research online last night those snaps kept coming up. Going to rig with those next and see what happens. They’re $$ like 50$ for a 12 pack. They better work awesome…guess if it saves me from losing 35$ baits it will be worth the investment. Will let y’all know how they work out
let us know how those snaps work out, congrats on the pretty fish. I’m sure it tasted just as good as the big ones. Can’t say i didn’t think about calling in sick yesterday with that awesome weather forecast.
On a related note, I haven’t high speed trolled very much at all. But in my limited experience, we seemed got a few bites whenever we slowed down to pick up the high speed gear. We even landed a nice dolphin that hit right as we backed off and started to pull the lines in. Is that kind of how it happened for y’all? Do you think that’s a common phenomenon and/or do people often slow down briefly while high speed trolling to see if the action picks up?
Funny you say that millacd we back tracked then where we picked up the fish and slowed down to about 5-6 mph to see if that was the case… Unfortunately it was getting late in the day and had to get back home so we pulled the plug after only 2 more passes. I’m tempted to do like the west coast guys do and get on the spot we’ve been hooking the hoo’s high speed trolling and go throw those wahoo bombs casting while drifting…
