Three of us took advantage of t h short and unusual calm to go bottom fisfing over hard bottom in 80ft. Used buck tails made by a friend from deer we killed to catch about 250 bsb, two flounder ( 16 & 25 " ) and 9 redfish over 15lbs. Good day; good friends.
Good times!!
Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!
I want to see a pic of the 25" flounder.
Unless I am mistaken, he has been et!
TT, I did not catch the flounder; I gaffed him. I’ve bumped a fair amount of lead on the bottom, but never caught a flounder in water that deep, but was not surprised. What was surprising, was this: we were using double buck tails, I think 3/4 and 1 1/2 oz., and the two were caught on the same drop - one on each jig. I have to wonder how many more were down there that the bsb wouldn’t let us get to. Would a diver care to comment?
Send numbers and I’ll let you know.
That sounds awesome! I have never caught a flounder that deep either, biggest I have caught inshore was 22". I have heard the flounder lay off the reef a little bit. Congrats on the trip, trying to make it out Sunday or Monday weather permitting.
The flounder are very thick offshore this time of year but near impossible to catch due to those endangered black sea bass… Blowing bubbles is about the only way you can really get to them.
Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!
Biggest I’ve caught was 24" in 70’ this time of year and was on a jig. Next to artificial reef.

The Flounder are thick around wreaks this time of year. We have gigged several limits on a dive. A few years ago when Grouper was open in Feb I was out with Capt. Jimmy and Auggie Dog bottom fishing in 120’ and she wore the Flounder out on Menhaden, nice 25" flounder!
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
We were not fishing near an artificial reef, but over live, natural hard bottom. Wouldn’t that be as likely to hold flounder as an artificial reef?
