Small Window = Good Fishing 11-29-07

Made the weather window and did pretty good with only myself and a friend:

4 Gags
1 10lb Scamp
4 kings
2 Limits of Sea Bass
B-Liners, Triggers, AJs
2 Red Fish 20 & 10lbs.

Got real nice for a while this AM. Did blow pretty good in the PM. The sea bass are starting to show up in good numbers. Never fished deeper than 100’ The gulf stream is in real close right now. Lots of 75 degree water out there today.

Phin…the reel I got from you is the deal. Todays count on that reel was 4 gags and 2 big spot tails. One of the best I have used for bottom fishing.

good job on your day! who you end up goin wid? call ya later for some details

how big were the spot tails?

sounds like a nice day on the pond.

The older I get, the better I was.

Again…very nice job.

If you can’t stand behind our soldiers, try standing in front of them.

Red Fish aka red drum, spot tail, channel bass, etc

Spot tails were around 20lbs and 10lbs. We thought they were gags until we got one up. We were broke of numerous times before we got one. They were in 50’ of water.

Mr. Old School Penn is still live and well. But, Phin did hook me up. I will say that he knows his stuff. If he wants to let the cat out of the bag that is his call. All I know is that I got a reel from him and it is the deal. I am impressed. The next test is longevity. My 113s are breaking gears and springs like crazy almost one a month. I am looking for a reel that can handle continuous bottom fishing.

The reel deal is a Penn 113HN “baja special.”

It is a ultra high speed special senator. (4.25:1 ratio)

4/0 narrow frame ideal for bottom fishing and jigging.

solid aluminum frame and spool, shielded stainless bearings (several more than a regular 113H), all stainless gears instead of brass, upgraded drag, etc. etc.
The reel free spools better, is smoother cranking, and has more durable gears than the regular senators. The biggest difference is the aluminum frame instead of the posts and screws the regular senators have. The solid frame keeps the drivetrain, spool, and even the anti-reverse pawl from undergoing awkward stress which seem to blow the regular senators out when you fish them with locked down drag. Keep in mind P1 is winding on fish all day long when he is fishing… the same for me and my reels when I go out there with him. The drivetrains of the reels really get worked over hard, and that’s why the regular 4/0 senators have been blowing out on him in my opinion. It seems like any time a reel has brass components on the inside without a solid metal frame to keep it all in line, then something is going to end up stripped out or mashed up inside. This is not to say that Senators are bad reels or anything. P1 is just using 4/0s where one would normally be using 6/0’s or 9/0’s in the past. I do the same thing when I use a 3/0 or 4/0 lightweight reel on a lightweight rod to bottom fish. It isn’t any fun for me to use some sort of heavy setup all day long with a can opener motor bogging down every time I get gagged up. :face_with_head_bandage::face_with_head_bandage::stuck_out_tongue:

Penn has come out with all metal senators, and they cost more than these 113HN Bajas, but they do not have the upgraded drag, bearings, and gears. It doesn’t make sense to me to charge so much more and only have the outside of the reel upgraded from the regular senators, but whatever. The Bajas have an aluminum metal inner frame and aluminum spool, but the sideplates are still plastic.

I am glad that it worked out well for P1, but you know every

What is the price difference though? I have been trying to screw you out of, I mean purchase a HX5/3 from you for a year now. They are expensive.

I put a bunch of time on a H/X this year, it is worth the money. That reel is perfect for the bottom and will be a great all around trolling reel.

Ill make you a deel on one S4G!!!

BTW Nice work P1

Pioneer 220 Baysport
Yamaha F250

Let’s say you walk into Charleston Angler, s4g.

You must double the buy-in when you play for the 113HN instead of the 113H. If you want to play for the HX5/2 instead of the 113HN, then you have to double the buy-in again.

Come off with some of that tire mold engineer money and get you some good bottom fishing reels. :stuck_out_tongue:

I have taken such a huge hit on those deals I have been giving you on Football tickets that I can’t afford one right now.

But if you are looking for ideas for Christmas, that would be nice. I will repay the favor by taking you on a BSB bottom fishing trip.

AND ONE MORE THING!!! I need to get your butt on my bote so I can get some bottom numbers to grouper that will require “reeling all day” :slightly_smiling_face:

10 lb. spot tails in 50 ft of water?? very interesting. i didnt think they moved offshore until the got bigger than that. go figure.

The older I get, the better I was.

10lbs was an estimate. The fish was about 30-33" inch range.
