When out with a friend today on his new to him boat. 2005 Mercury Verado 250 hp, smokes some when you come off plane and then continues to smoke a very little bit at idle. Just curious, is this normal or might there be a problem?

If its a two stroke, its going to smoke some. That is where the oil is being burnt in the cylinder with the gas and then going out the exhaust

I have an 06 Verado 150 and it does not smoke (yet). What color is the smoke? According to the veradoclub.com, white smoke= normal; blue smoke = bad. Shut engine off immediately if you see this.

Are you sure that is is not steam? Look at it closely; follow it as it moves away from the boat. If it disappears then it is steam. This time of year with the cooler water it is normal.

Ditto Hairball. Mine does that when the engine or air is cool.
