Snake at the boat landing.

Pulled the boat out late last night at sullivans island. Long story short just about stepped on a snake getting the truck. Hard to tell in the dark but fairly sure it was a copperhead. Just an fyi, if your out there at night a flashlight would be handy. I know I’ll take on from now on.

I always wear a headlamp when taking the boat in/out after dark. Not for snakes, but more for making sure I don’t trip on something creating a bad situation alone, or if someone sketchy is around, a good light always deters any suspect activity. If it doesn’t the 38 in the pocket will.

Any cheap lamp will do, but I prefer the Black Diamond headlamps. Very light, uses less power, very bright, and the settings for output are great.

I’ve stepped on snakes in the dark more than once. My initial reaction if it wiggles under my foot and I can’t see it, is to scream like a little girl and jump as far away as I can. Hopefully not right into a fence post or tree. Usually can get about 30’ in a single leap. If it rattles I might even clear 50’. Unless I hit a tree. I can cause more damage to myself in the dark than a rat snake can do me :face_with_head_bandage:

And I do like the little LED headlamps that just clip on your hat brim. Bright enough and very inexpensive.

Larry,
I completely agree with you on that one. I think we must have the exact same reactions to snakes. Sometimes I think shrieking like a little girl attracts them because they seem very fond of me. Our encounters always have the same ending though. .40 ensures the snakes and I never meet again.
