I stopped by Crosby on Folly Road to see if anyone was catching anything from the dock and the guy told me he had just caught a snakehead. Another guy confirmed that it was a snakehead. Maybe this is a dumb question but is it true there are snakeheads in this area? I haven’t been here long and I didn’t know were found in saltwater.

also, that’s folly creek, which is full salinity. Maryland DNR reports that some individual northern snakeheads may be able to tolerate low salinities, but the above is my guess.
Barbawang, I’ve caught something that looks a LOT like that hake off the bride over Breech. It’s been 6 or 8 years since I’ve fished that bridge, but I was catching 4-6 of them a day when I fished there. Deep, along the pilings near the middle, when the tide was slow enough that I could do such at thing.
By the way, is there any chance of bowfin at Wappoo? I know bowfin do live in brackish, but not sure about living in full salt.

Funny you posted this. when i was taking out my boat at wappoo Friday afternoon there was a family fishing on the dock and they had what they thought was a snake head. He ask me to come over and take a look because he thought it was a snake head. My immediate thought was that this guy was crazy. I took a look at the fish and had no idea what it was. It was pretty small and didn’t look like the photos i had seen of snake heads. Plus it wasnt fresh water. it had two long wisker looking thing coming out from under its throat on the sides, one on each side. Kind of like catfish wiskers but on the bottom of it throat, which made me think it wasnt a snake head. yep, just saw barbawangs post. It was no doubt the Europhycis floridana. I looked at this fish hard and that is what it was, 100 percent with out a doubt.

I’m thinking the key to Snake Head i.d. is the dorsal fin. Snake Head has one long dorsal. If the dorsal is broken at all it’s not a Snake Head. Plus they are MEAN looking fish. But I agree, Hake.

The manatee that made it’s way into Lake Marion (and subsequently died) a couple years ago I think is a bit more strange than a bowfin in saltwater, but I know you’re probably right about that.
I have yet to actually catch a mudfish, but that’s partly b/c of the way I fish, I don’t do a lot of largemouth or crappie fishing, at least not the past couple years. If I’m going to get skunked, I want to get skunked fishing for redfish lol.
