Snapper/Grouper. How to catch live bait?

Went offshore last Sunday to try to get some red snapper. We try to catch live bait by the chanel markers outside the jetties using sabiki rigs both naked and tipped with squid tentacles without any luck. Not even a pinfish of the bottom. I figure we were trying in the wrong place. Do you guys have any advice on where to catch live bait. I see folks posting they got a 100 baits in an a half hour jigging for them.

I just go with live menhaden if/when I can catch them. Frozen cigar minnows are what worked for us this past weekend, live and cut fresh menhaden resulted in AJ’s and sharpnose sharks.

If it’s calm, you can often see the schools on the surface. If not, use your sonar. A little trial and error and you’ll be an expert in no time.

I seriously do not why they are illegal here?

Fish the up current side of the last few cans, there is a ton of bait there.

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

wish i was fishing from wrightsville, with 5 dead shrimp you can catch 100 pin fish in about 15 minutes, here not so much

can you swim 5 miles? “NO” then what is the difference in 5 miles and 50 miles!!! Go for it!

Pinfish are extremely abundant in the saltwater ponds.

We got no problem in the MI area. In fact we have a spot that consistently loads us up. The trap ban is Ruh tar ted…I dont get it. I bought one in Florida and almost had a fit when I found out they are illegal here.

OK…so lets do something about it. We have plenty of lawyers on this site that can right a petition for us to sign and take to the general assembly. How bout it Yellabird??

Me either.

I don’t understand why we can catch mud minnows and eels in a trap, and commercial sea bass fishermen can use traps for BSB, but we can’t catch pinfish for bait in a trap. It doesn’t make sense. No shortage of pinfish in the summer around here and their ultimate destiny in life is to feed something larger anyway. They might as well feed a grouper rather than a crab.

I do most of my offshore fishing in the FL GOM now and we can trap bait there. We always set out 3 traps the evening before fishing the next morning, pull them on the way out and re-bait. Empty again the next morning. Usually get 200-300 pin fish and other small baits before heading out. You can also buy them in bait shops on the FL gulf coast, but they cost $1 each, $100 a hundred and smaller than I like, and we want 200. Better to set the traps! After years of trial and error, fried chicken is the best bait possible and silver colored traps out fish black and red colors.

I agree…where do i sign…

After our encounter with the DNR yesterday, I doubt they employ anyone that can tell a pinfish trap from a crabtrap. Im down…lets get this petition going.

Whatcha want to do? Legalize pinfish traps?

Stephen Goldfinch
“Sleep When You’re Dead!”

Yes Mr Goldfinch. Not that many people would even take the time to use them but legalizing pinfish traps would be beneficial to the fisherman without being harmful to the ecosystem. How many pinfish do shrimpers catch/kill with each pull of the death nets???!!

Does anybody have the regulation regarding pinfish traps? I tried and can’t find anything. Always been told they were illegal!

Steve, call Sgt Angus Mcbride with SCDNR, he knows the ins and outs of the pinfish trap law, because he enforces it!

If we can get a petition made, I will post one in my store for signatures. Is it true that you need to get 10,000 signatures to get something on a ballot?

I’ll direct everybody I can from the GA fishing forums to sign it too.
