Snapping Turtle bite is on Fire

Caught and released this in a creek just off the Wando. Used a rapala firetiger clackin rap.

Awesome. Turtle soup?

Diamondback terrapin. They used to be heavily commercial harvested for soup.

Man, that’s a alligator cooter. Even a small one will take a tip of a finger! and they love baby ducks.

You’re so funny.

The females are usually twice the size of the males…

Ok, I’m using a combination of internet knowledge and hearsay, I just want you guys to know that before I get too far into this. Evidently those terrapins are incredibly important to our marshes. They feed on periwinkle snails and the snails feed on the marsh grass. The snails are thriving and the turtles are dwindling. They’re worried about the snails turning the marsh grass areas into mud flats. If you see some new crabbing or shrimping regulations come out this may be the cause. I’ll try to find something to back this up.

Bunch of rookies… Now this is a snapping turtle

dam!

What a beast. My dad caught one that was too big to fit in a 50 gallon wash bin back when I was a kid.

It’s probably safer to play with alligators honestly.

SOF, I guess that’s one reason that the Sheepshead population exploded in the marshes around my place a few years back. Fiddlers and snails everywhere. I’ve heard they are great bait but have never had the chance to try it. I would imagine they stay on a little better than shrimp and crab.

WTF?!? What color was he? Orange, purple, red or blue? I can’t tell them apart without their weapons or bandanas. Was Master Splinter around?

Anyway, it was the post and courier that had the article. They’re usually hearsay and internet knowledge too though. Here’s the link.
