I’m by no means the expert at all on boats but do you not make sure you have 16oz of oil per every 6 gallons of gas in your boat? I always did this when I filled up and always had a gallon or more extra on board. Now on my boat the reserve had been removed and oil added straight with the gas b/c when using the reserve it always burned much more oil. I did however have to write “add oil” below the gas cap so it would remind me and sometimes I still would forget until right when I was putting in the boat. Maybe you can clear me up on this subject here…I was guessing here by you knowing how much you had on board that you use your reserve.

I cannot pre-mix the oil for a high pressure direct injection motor. The remote oil system has to be used.
I had a gallon and a half of oil in my system when I left the hill. I have made a trip offshore where more distance was put under the keel than what I planned for Tuesday and only burnt a gallon of oil. 1.5 gallons at a 50:1 ratio is good for 75 gallons of fuel. My boat holds 86 gallons of fuel topped off… so that was in itself proof that I made a poor decision…
I went to the store to buy supplies for the trip and they were sold out of the oil I use, and the only decent oil on the shelf that would not be “bad” for my direct injection motor was $39.99/gallon quicksilver so I did not purchase it because th

I have been trying to follow your example and take relatively few pictures of offshore excursions. The memories are better than the pictures. I suppose we need proof though.
These are the very nice folks who brought us the oil.

That was me and the wife that brought the oil. Felt bad about taking the grouper, but not while we were eating it. It was awesome. Going to have to start fishing for them.

Don’t let him off that easy. He owes you a fishing trip and a case of beer at least.
Nice of you to assist! Good to have people out there that actually overly prepare for their trips offshore and don’t just take enough to get by.[:0][:0]
If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.

Wes, we all make mistakes and I like you have always and will always keep an extra gallon jug on board just to make sure!! I have used the somewhat cheaper Penzoil with the TCW3 additive and have had no problems thus far, I do not know if you can use that type of oil or not on your particular motor but if you can, it has treated us well for quite a few years with several different outboards and it seem to be much cheaper than the qucksilver lubricants!!

Wes, I think the most impressive aspect of this whole fiasco is that you immediately diagnosed your problem, realized you weren’t going to make it in, had the ability to swallow your pride and call for help, had the SPOT to notify dry land that you needed help, and still maintained the safety of your crew. As I was reading this post, I kept thinking about the NFL players lost offshore of Tampa, Fla., and the importance of experience and knowing what to do and, more importantly, knowing what NOT to do. God bless them and hopefully other people have learned from their mistakes. Wes, as routine as your actions may seem, you probably saved lives! My hat is off to you!
Oh yeah…who appointed A2Z as the limit police!!!
