And now I’m looking for a reel to match it with. I plan on using the rod offshore for dolphin, sailfish hopefully, no reefdonkeys, anything else big I can throw it at. Maybe using it on occasion for tarpon if I ever get down to florida. Not very likely. Primarily for offshore Charleston use.
if you can find a deal and its in the budget, an Abel 12 or Tibor would be hard to beat. 300 plus yds of Power pro HI Viz 50 as backing and your set. I believe the drag on an abel could stop most cars.
Do- cast at reefdonkeys- they will challenge you and your tackle
Do- leave a small dolphin in the rod holder and cast at his buddies
Dont- skimp on the big stuff- drags are important here…a hestiation or “stick” in the drag can and most likely cost you a big fish.
Dont- worry, I’ll go with ya:smiley:
I have used most of my reels on several different weight rods. I have a small saltwater reel that I have caught freshwater pond bass and albies at Cape Lookout. The smaller reel stopped the big albies dead. No problem. My point being, you don’t need to lock yourself into a 12 weight reel for your 12 weight rod. Offshore fly fishing is not a lot of double-hauling and loading the rod, etc… The backbone that that rod has will be great to stop a big offshore fish that you didn’t expect to hit. But, maybe a reel that is rated for a 10 wt rod and up will work for all of your needs. I have (and I know that a couple of the other boys have) the large Lampson reel. You can try mine out to see if it is a good weight ratio for that rod and go from there. I use my Lampson reel on a 10 weight rod and often worry that I might hook a big shark or AJ and snap it in two.
I fish the Lamson litespeed as well (the biggest one). its rated at a 10-11, but has a huge retrieve ratio and is very light weight (it was the lightest reel in that class at the time i bought it). it will hold around 200yds of 30lb backing (or 50lb braid) However, in the deep when you just never know, i rather have as much as possible…150yds goes quick. the drag on the Lamsons are great and super smooth and would be a great dolphin/king/ medium offshore reel.
So, is Ross out of the question? I’d like to stay under $300 as I’ve bought two other fly rods/reels in the last two months. I guess I could wait another few months and get myself a nice Christmas present…
