Skinne…Don’t forget Chris has a big retail operation in Murrells Inlet. Could him not having access to product there weigh into his decision…?

You mean keeping things as they are will change his access? No. I want things to stay the SAME. Same access tomorrow as he had yesterday. He is voting for change, not me.

No…I mean is he voting that way to insure his retail has access to fish to sale. I’m not sure if everyone here realizes he has a huuuge retail operation that sells a ton of fish to tourists. I realize we don’t want diminished access. Eff that.

I’m not sure if you know what defending means but just in case you don’t, you are…
Changing the way you do it and why doesn’t change a thing,he thru recreational fishermen under the bus big time…
What you are doing makes me wonder what’s your stake in this whole process and is rather embarrassing…just sayin.

I’m a rec guy that owns a 44’ Davis sporty. I have never sold a fish in my life. I’m just discussing things rationally. Go back and read all of my posts through the years. I was in Washington DC a few years back…Just Sayin.

The fact that Chris Conklin has a family seafood business goes back to one of the main points of conflict of interest. We are all involved in different businesses and have different struggles in life. Few businesses have the legal right to harvest SHARED resources that are a valuable and rare commodity.

I was in Murrells Inlet last week and stopped in his seafood store merely to check it out. I saw Chris at the several SAFMC meetings i went to and I have had nothing but distaste for him since day 1. It was a known thing that it would come to catch shares of some sort one day soon and it was part of the plan from day 1 for him to sell us out. I did not buy anything from his store and I never will and for what its worth as well…Sellsfish Seafood puts his store to shame on several levels.

Regardless of anything related to his seafood business, all politics at this point is totally f$cked. NO ONE can be trusted as there is a bigger agenda in every situation that involves money. From police to new mayoral candidates for Charleston to Chas County local govt employees to our beloved governor Haley ■■■■ who wants to sell out our coastline for the little bit of oil that might be found. This is USA same story different day. It is horrible to see everything going this route. Phin…What do we do? Please advise and im ok with violence

Just so you guys know, there are X-commercial fishermen in the gulf who own 100’s of thousands of shares. They are “X” because they figured out that it’s easier to lease out their catch shares to other people… So, let’s say that you own 100,000 lbs of shares, and you lease them out to Joe Blow for $1 per share. Joe Blow goes out and does the work and makes money, but you sit in your lazy boy watching the Simpsons taking selfies with your $100K check that you only have because the government let you “own” those shares. I haven’t personally verified, but I heard of an instance where one guy was making $400K per year from leasing out his shares. How is this fisheries management?

Sounds like Tobacco allotments years ago…

I think the plan is for EDF and other enviro groups to own as many catch shares as they can get their hands on. Chris has a wonderful relationship with EDF

Why would EDF have to wait for catch shares, couldn’t they simply buy up existing permits and boats and not fish them? They could do this today.

Try to buy a commercial snapper/grouper license and tell us successful you are. Its a limited entry , dead end process . You will not find one for sale.

Wrong there are many for sale just takes 38 thousand a buddy just got one last week.

Must be lucrative.

Really depends on the catch history as to if you are getting a good deal or not. RIGHT NOW, they are all the same, but if they switch over to catch shares, they usually do the allocation based on last 5 years catch history. If the previous owner has been sitting on them and not doing anything, then that 38K was not well spent. That's really the risk in this type of investment.

And those are the guys that are being chased out of the fishery. When those guys are gone, then the active fishermen can gobble up all of their catch shares and increase their pay day.

Skinnee is correct. The license is available, but not from the feds. They’re not writing new paper. If you get one its from a present ticket holder and the price STARTS at 38K… By morning it may be 40K

Skinnee is correct it needs a good catch history not one been on a boat sitting in a boat yard for years its kinda like buying a plane that is due for its annual versus one just been done big price difference there is a guy in jacksonville fla that works as a broker he tries to get good history if anyone looking some on probably know of him.

I know of one for sale in the inlet if anyone is interested. Probably 35k if someone wants to roll the dice.

I recently saw a GA commercial crabbing license sell for $38K!

You forgot to mention that it is also a double down policy. You must buy two licenses to obtain one for you. They have been doing that for years to try to lower the number of commercial fisherman

Lots of good comments here, but the question is still unanswered: if EDF or similar wanted to purchase catch shares or similar, why aren’t they purchasing existing permits now, regardless of price?

I guess it depends on how the catch shares are configured - if it happens. A federal snapper grouper license will not do what EDF wants - stopping fishing. It might take a few tickets out of circulation - but the guys that have the licenses will fish on!

ONLY 1 IF IS IN A CORPERATION 2 OTHERWISE THEY USUALLY GO FOR AROUND 16 EACH.
