so-so trip

Went with high and dry and Robbie on his 23’ Sailfish. We Ran to the Subway cars at full throttle. The ocean was very nice on the way out. We caught plenty of live bait and left to go to a piece of ledge in the new MPA area…(should have stayed at the subway cars). A mile from the ledge, the wind machine turns on and it goes from calm to 3’ at 4 sec. We anchored over a nice spike of fish, only to find a nursery school of pinks and B-liners. I’ll bet we released 50 short fish there. Moved to a few more promising spots, marking grouper on the bottom, could not get them to bite! Moved back inshore and caught all the usual suspects, and finally pulled a nice red grouper over the side. I did have 2 breakoffs, do to old power pro. So ended the day with only one grouper, a bunch of b-liners, pinks , porgies, grunts, and three Moray eels. We had 4 teenager sized dolphin come up to the boate in 85’ and 68 degree water. They had lockjaw too. I put a live sardine on the biggest ones nose, and he did not eat it. Oh well, sometines it is fishing, not catching.

It’s still better than being at work! Still a pretty decent day.

Ricky, is your livewell mounted in the transom? If so do you have a problem with it overflowing while running? I could not get this on to stop yesterday. The overflow pipe was not plugged. I finallly closed the seacock down 3/4’s to solve the problem.

We also had some trouble getting them to go again when the wind was shifting in every direction. Seems like the current was acting funky at the same time… those are the times when we just need to sit down and eat a sammich or fried chicken because trying to figure it out will make you feel stupid. When it finally settled with a direction, Rick got us back on some good fish. I had two knots in brand new 80# (momoi diamond) leader snap yesterday with medium-sized gags halfway up… then I caught a nice one with a leader that I knew had been frayed a bit near the hook by a few sharks and all the verbillion and red porgy swarms… got him in the bote though. I tied all these hooks on the leaders at the same time the night before- identical knots, hooks and line. … like you said not catching but fishing. :sunglasses:
