Soft spot

I had a soft spot in my casting platform since I bought my skiff 3 years ago. I finally got around to cutting it out and glassing in a new one today and found this mess sandwiched in between the fiberglass. Why would anyone use 3" squares of plywood for a platform? Has anyone seen this before?

All I can say is WOW!

It’s more common than you think.

Was it a home made platform or did it come from the boat manufacture?
Looks like scrap someone had leftover from something. Sure would have been easier, just to cut 1 piece!

It’s very common. You see that from a lot of manufacturers. I cut the deck out of a Grady White a couple of weeks ago and it looks just like that.

I have a 1986 Wellcraft V20 and the hatch over the gas tank was the same as this.

If my 06 mckee said “no wood construction” do you think I could still see something like this on my boat?

I am in the process of replacing a major portion of my deck that I found had gone soft when I removed the fuel tank for repair.

It’s a factory original casting platform. It leaked through the mounting screws in the three hatches I have up front. What is the absolute best product for sealing mounting screws? Also I left myself some meat (3") around the edges of the old platform so I could glass the new one to. This 3" is sound material, but I will have a 1/2" gap around the edges of the new piece. What is the best material for filling this gap? Thanks for the replies.
