In addition to the reds, BSB, croakers, we had Spanish chasing bait around the boat. Hooked up with a couple but bit right through the leaders.
Also had a small hammerhead (definitely a hammerhead, not a bonnethead) swim around the boat for several minutes. We tried to catch him and he would come up and investigate the bait but would only eat a bait after we took it off the hook and tossed it to him. Really cool to see.
Then had a manta ray jump twice between us and the rocks, that was amazing. Didn’t even know there were manta rays in this area.
Probably spotted eagle rays…mantas are not common in inshore waters around here.
This wasn't a spotted eagle ray. I've seen mantas jumping in Hawaii, big ones, this was just a junior version of those guys. Dark grey/black on top, white belly, those (not sure what the they're called....scuppers?) things to funnel food towards his mouth. 100% manta ray.
I saw some manta rays at the jetties 3-4 years ago, not really big ones but manta. I’ve been told that many years ago, people used to harpoon large mantas in Charleston Harbor.
Saw Labor Day weekend a Manta free jumping in beaufort river. Prolly 6’ wing to wing. Then the next day had one get caught in my cousins anchor rope and drag it around for a couple min. That thing was 10-12’ across And saw the wings beating against the boat with my own eyes
