something all boat owners should have

Chapman Piloting book.
Seamanship and small boat handling

If you dont have one, get one. Its starts off with “What is a boat?”… and goes thru pretty much everything you need to know about boating. Got one the other day and I love it. Pretty thick but I will probably actually read all of this book.

What year and edition did you get? I see amazon has a ton of older books, but the 66th edition was put out in 2009. Looks like you can get the 1996 version dirt cheap, and the 2009 for $32.

Many go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

i have one from the around late '60’s- early '70’s. almost all the info is still good, they mostly just update the pictures and graphics in newer versions, so it does not look so dated.

only real difference is they allow women to captain boats now:wink:.

The newer update keeps up with today’s technology. GPS, digital radar, DSC VHF, collision avoidance systems and that sort of stuff.
I agree, it is a must have bible for serious boaters. It’s well worth the money.

I have a 1989 copyrighted version that my dad gave to me. 59th edition. As previously stated, the info in the old ones is still good but the new copies are up to date w gps etc. 32 bucks for the 09 version sounds like a pretty good deal. I would get that one.

Thanks I will look into it

Grat reading! The water is as wet today as it was in 1989!Like Cracker said its the watermans Bible.

Have a 1966 copy of The American Pratical Navigator by Nathaniel Bowditch handed down to me by my Dad. Basically the precurser to Chapmans Piloting but has a lot more world wide navagational information. Book has been around the world with me twice,so far! I think I read it cover to cover before I was 10 yo! Also have the Chapmans Piloting book which definitly is a must have book for any serious boater.

It amazes me how many people are out there boating without even BASIC knowledge of boat handling, navigation, rules of the road, etc. It’s always most apparent watching people run aground on the sandbar at the mouth of Shem Creek. There are range markers at the creek entrance for a reason.
