Hopefully somebody knows what this is but it didn’t look right. Yesterday when we were coming back in we were a few miles inland past the Charleston 60 and it looked like a weed line up ahead. Running up on it, it appeared to be a gold glittery river floating on top. It stretched for miles and all the water around looked like it had gold glitter in it. Running further in we hit a few more patches of it like it all ran in its own channel of current. Anyone ever seen this before?
Well Larry since you have an idea of what that gold stuff is hopefully you can tell me what all those schools of splashes I see in the water are. Last couple times out, I’ve seen what appears to be schools of baitfish hitting top water possibly running from something but when I get close all the action stops. I’ve casted into the middle and still nothing. And with the water stirred up from the splashing I haven’t been able to see what it is. They are everywhere and occasionally I see the birds picking at them. Identity?

So do I:smiley: It makes good chum too. The last time I dumped a half can in the water we caught black drum until my arms hurt!

Ricky, as sellfish said, they are probably sardines, but could also be anchovies or glass minnows, or other. In any case, it sounds like you might be scaring them down with the boat. You can’t just run into the middle of them. When you see a school of bait like that on the surface, watch them for a few minutes from a distance and see how they are moving, then ease your boat quietly in front of them, so that your drift and their movement will intersect in a minute. Then put out cigar minnows, spanish sardines, ballyhoo, chunk some lures, and throw a sabiki into the bait and rig whatever you catch on it. Those schools usually move fast and you have to reposition often to stay in front of them. Run way around them so you don’t scare them down and try to intersect them.
Another option is to troll, but don’t run through the middle of the bait, just work the edges and again try to stay in front of them.
When you see birds diving and baitfish, you can bet the rent there is game fish of some sort below them. Right now it could be spanish, kings, jacks, bluefish, little tunny, maybe even tarpon, never know till ya bait a hook:smiley:
That plankton weed line is also a good place to tr
ROW!!!
Might have to lighten up on the crew though?
A picture of SkinneeJ and Sells fishing!! The scenario - BIG SHARK!! SkinneeJ paddling thinking I got this - Sells thinking OH @#@# - We need a bigger boat!
