The flu has had me down for the last three days. The last three days were supposed to be , weatherwise, the best we’ve had in weeks.
Surely, some of you fished. Will you give us something to read other than what we’ve been reading for weeks?
Sorry to hear about the flu, got a couple of grandkids with it…
I did pull some Dolphin out the freezer Hutch’s son gave me and cooked it. Sorry no fishing report…
Sorry about the flu. It has been horrible this year. I don’t have much to help, but we did go out bottom fishing Saturday. Was honored to have on board, among others, a coworker who had just returned from almost a year deployed in Kuwait. Caught a limit of nice black sea bass pretty quickly and then spent the rest of the day looking for vermillion and triggers without much success. Caught maybe 10 triggers and a couple of vermillion. Eating a leftover fish sandwich for dinner as we speak. Ocean was nice, 1-2ft all day. 70-100 feet. Lots of baby sea bass kept the anglers busy. Hope you feel better soon.
We headed out of Wappoo for Edisto Banks at 6:30 on Sunday. The sky was overcast with a little more wind still blowing than the forecast. After about 34 miles running we found ourselves near some live bottom areas in 100’ of water with fish breaking and lots of bait. What the heck. I have heard of Wahoo in shallower waters sometimes so out go the outriggers with Yozuri Bonitas, skirted ballyhoo, and a plain squid lure. Five minutes later we had the first knock down with a bonita, then another, and another. Then the kings fired up and skied out of the water crashing baits. Amazing site to see 20-40 lb kings leaping 8’ out of the water. While we never got the wahoo or blackfin we were hoping for, it was non-stop action and all on board had a great morning. We left them biting hard and headed for some bottom fishing. Lots of large BSB’s, endangered ARS, a nice gag, pinks, and porgies. Oddly enough, we only caught one small vermillion and no triggers. The seas flattened out during the day and we ran in at 40. All in all a very good day of fishing with both fish boxes full. I have not figured out how to post photos as my display does not include an icon for attaching them. Any advise on that would be appreciated.

Sounds like another safe and productive trip, Jeff. Thanks to everyone for sharing.
What are you having the most success with for the BSB? I’ve used squid and fiddlers but seem to use most of my time re-baiting from all the juvies. I’ve seen some use buck tail jigs with a soft plastic trailer. Comments? I’m still about a month away from my new boat arriving but am looking so forward to my first bottom fishing trip in mid March.

I always use fresh squid, comes off a local shrimp boat, not walmart, then fresh cut bait when you catch some of the other stuff normally found on the same bottoms. You may be able to find them at a local seafood dealer but most of them carry old frozen stuff. Local squid is much tougher than the old frozen and I usually catch three to four fish per bait. The main point is finding bottom that holds the larger fish. A lot of folks use the jigs with much success too.

I fixed this on Sunday. Having working water is good.

Re: bait for bsb. My primary fishing partner loves to make and try new baits- stuff you will not likely see on thre store shelf We have been using one that really catches big bsb; it’s too big for the little ones. Send me an email, and I’ll see if he will give up a few…
