I use my Garmin for the charts, depth, speed, water temp, tides, etc. But I haven’t learned how to know what I’m looking at on the sonar. So what is this? I don’t think my Garmin shows the arcs or upside-down U’s for fish because I’ve never seen them. I do, however, see spots and blobs like below. Are these for sure fish?
my guess would be clusters of bait;; are you in salt or fresh?? different units display images in salt slightly different than ■■■■■■■■■■■ user info to see if there is a setting or freq. adjustment that can be made… Screen image is snowy looking but that may also just be pic.copy…
The screen works well and is crisp, not snowy. The image is terrible because of phone photo, moving boat, sunshine, etc.
This was taken in saltwater. I’ve never had this boat in freshwater so I don’t know what differences there would be with this unit.
The image above is not common, so I was certainly over something. But I had no idea what. I though, if bait, throw a net and see. But maybe it’s structure and that’d just be a great way to lose my net. Or maybe it was a school of trout or reds? The size looks big to me, but again, I never know what I’m looking at on that thing.
Looks like bait to me
OK ! then my first guess stands ; small bait balls , depth not that great for them to be large clusters, just my thoughts
Throw a big 10’ net next time you see that and find out. Could be shrimp, sand perch, or other small fish
I’ve heard people say things on this form like: “sight fishing with sonar” “using sonar to find fish feels like cheating” as if it’s that easy
Are those people legit?
Can you really just cruise a creek and find fish to cast back on?
Basically, is it worth my time to really dial in and learn the fish finder?
I have had some success in spotting suspended fish along structure and changes of bottom contour using my SI humminbird. the more you become familiar with it the better… Bait balls are the easiest to see from the side because a ball shows a more distinct shadow revalent to water depth…Down image is harder to discern balls from structure IMO…

Looks like bait on your Garmin. I’ve been able to use my Lowrance to find stripers on lake Moultrie…My image shows striper at about 15 feet… Tight lines…
