Soo.. Just got my first fly rod

have no idea how to use it. I walked downstairs to try it out in my back yard and threw it for a bit. If anyone wants to teach me the way, I’d be glad to be stewarded. I’d help split gas and bring the beer too. I am currently attending the college of Charleston, real down to earth guy, and one hell of a bass fisher and off shore guy, just not a big fly man. Trying to figure it out while I’m young.

The Charleston Angler periodically has fly-fishing 101 seminars (monthly, I think). Well worth the time and minimal cost. I think they charge enough to cover the lunch, maybe? I think? They cover all the basics. Short of that, if you just walk in and there aren’t lots of customers in the store, they’ll often take you out on the lawn and get you going with the basics.

At the other end of the cost spectrum, they are having a private class with the grand father of fly casting, Lefty Kreh. See their website for details(http://theCharlestonAngler.com). I have yet to decide whether or not I want to do the Kreh class. Learning from him would be fun. Just meeting him might be worth the price.

welcome to the addiction…we can help ya anytime as well with the casting/tying- as can MadMike @ the C Angler…the importan thing is to learn the right things 1st, so you dont have to “unlearn” bad habits. the video posted here earlier wil Mel Kreiger is a good one too- simple and true advice. plus he’s a hoot to listen too

You’re screwed… just like the rest of us.

You can find some good casting instruction on youtube for the evenings when you can’t be out actually casting or fishing

Enjoy your newfound addiction

goes home through the alley.

Go see ScottyD or Mad Mike… you will not regret it. I learned more form those two about salt water fly fishing in a few trips to see them than all the boob-tube videos you will find. There is nothing better than having a person there to show you how to do it right the first time. Once they get ya on the way it is up to you to put in the hours of practice and top keep up with it.

That old adage “Practice makes perfect” is horse-dookie… PERFECT Practice makes perfect…

Nothing beats hands on instuction. My brother-in-law, and WV fly fisherman of 10 years, taught me in my back yard with no fly tied on with his 4wt. If you start with nothing prior its best so you dont have to undo the bad habits. He had be casting fairly tight loops in about 15 minutes. Atleast get the basics from a hands on situation to be able to practice on your own. Other than that welcome to the addiction

Welcome to the addiction…! Practice, practice, practice and just when you think you got it down, practice some more…!

I took some books out of the library and watched some ou tube videos and them went straight to the neighborhood pond and started catching bream. There is also a new show of the world fishing network called the orvis guide to fly fishing which is in its first season and teaches all the basics
