South Carolina DOT signs

Who can enforce SCDOT signs? I’m having an issue at a property and Charleston County doesn’t want to help out. Where should I look for answers?

What kind of sign/problem?

No fishing from bridge and no fishing from road signs. They continue to let people do it and they are trashing the property and trespassing on private property. Then code enforcement sends you a notice to “clean up” your property or they are going to fine you $1000. I’m sick of it.

Lawyer up dude!!!’’mm’m

I’d rather work with everyone assuming they want to work with me. We both want the same things, for the trash and littering and problems to stop.

DOT is not law enforcement. Who can enforce their signs?

Might try calling SCDNR, and have a Game Warden meet you on site? They should be able to advise you on how to handle this situation.

Ask the folks at code enforcement, specifically the person that sent you the letter, what is your recourse.

That’s where I’d start, they are most likely to know what others have done in response to their warnings.

Plant poison ivy around the bridge? Beware of snakes sign? Obama fished here sign, lol

Best of luck

So unfortunately any time I’ve ever asked for DNR help, they aren’t interested in helping me. They typically just find ways for the violators to skirt around the rules.

EF, If it were legal AND DOT didn’t maintain the vegetation around the metal guardrails near the bridge, I would do plant something there. The problem is that they come through multiple times a year and weedeat and destroy the vegetation within a few feet of the railings.

And while I appreciate the responses, you obviously haven’t had much run in with code enforcement. They are unwilling to help in this case. They “don’t offer legal advice” of any kind. They just want to make the complaint and force you to clean it up. They aren’t interested in solving any problems other than to force the property owner to do it at threat of fines.

Very sorry to hear about this. Wish I had an answer. I’ve been through the same thing in the last year, dealing with various agencies, getting permits, etc.

Typical govt inefficiency, ineptitude, lack of accountability, etc, ALL on OUR money. Very frustrating.

I agree here with talking to DNR, and the Sheriff’s Dept. about the trespassing and littering issues. DOT only places the signs, but Law enforcement should be enforcing any laws that the signs pertain to. IF you’re not getting anywhere with officers, go over their heads! Unfortunately it may take some time & effort on your part, but you know that they don’t like the squeaky wheels, especially those in charge. Emails and letters are a good way to contact them, but in person is even better. It can be very frustrating when dealing with any government entity. I’m dealing with Probate Courts, with my wife’s passing, and some of it gets down right silly. But, it’s the process and what’s established, so you have to play their games. :slightly_frowning_face:
