Spade flys

Has anyone ever caught one on a fly? What pattern. Thought about throwing at a few tomorrow.

I saw a pattern somwhere that showed you how to tie jelly balls as a fly… I’ll see if I can find it again… it might have been on here…

“Carpe Diem” does not mean “Fish of the Day”…

you don’t think they’d hit a small white fly?

Celaphane/plastic baggie, crytal flash, small eyes #4 hook. Tie it with mono an try to form the celaphane to look like a piece of jelly with the flash under it. Friend showed me. Works too. Delicate fly though.

Instead of white Stretch maybe some silver clear looking nylon hair or something… I don’t know I have never seen a spade fish let anlone fly casted for one… I am still trying to get my long rod out after some reds…

never seen a spadefush? Roll out to the nearshore and beat up on em.

Tough fighting fish.

If you wanna get the younguns on some constant action anchor up where the jetties submerge…south jetty on either tip, small piece of shrimp on a float will produce as many hand sized spades as you want. I’m sure they’d take a fly…even those little guys put on a decent fight.

That’d be a little dicey in my 11ft kayak and a kid strapped to the back  Gotta wait for my buddy with the boat to get back

Sounds good to me! I get back from Seattle around the 29th of July… we’ll have to get on it early august…

I made a fly with claer rainbow flash cut into very small peices. I used wax paper and dropped some epoxy on it and mixed in the flash. Just before it started to gel, I placed the hook into the gel. It looks pretty good, but I have not yet tried it. If I take my fly rod fishing, it’s windy. Leave it at home…beautiful.

10-4, shoot me an email when you get back and we’ll figure something out.

Take a #4 hook and blob a little silicone on it, then let it dry. Take a paint pen (pink, brown, or red) and add a little color. Gather cannonball jellies and string them (6-8 of them) on a piece of thin nylon line with an empty leader spool and a 4 or 5 ounce sinker at the bottom. Lower the “chain” down to the wreck or whatever structure you are fishing. Chop up a few jellies and start a light slick. Once you get the spades in a frenzy, start raising the “chain” until you can just barely see it (and the fish), then drift your fly down in the slick and hang on. Spades are like bream on steriods. Hope this helps and have fun!

I almost forgot. 7 or 8 weights with intermediate lines work best. A floater will work too, just wrap the hook shanks with leadcore.

have caught them in chesapeake bay with a piece of cigarette cellophane lashed to hook with thin red rubber band, think hook was red #4 diachhi circle on 9wt. intermediate line. try attaching chum to bow, stand on stern, cast up past chum and allow to drift back to you like freshwater trout fishermen, as they wouldnt hit anything with the smallest amount of “drag”.

heard the celophane thing actually works.

I’ve heard of people using saran wrap with success.

Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling?
