Spadefish (Inshore?!)

No doubt, caught my first ever ‘inshore’ spade fish this weekend.

Was about the size of a small salad plate. Thought the convicts were theiving us, but finally hooked one up. To my surprise, it was no convict!

Has anyone else caught one inside of the breakers before??

Tight lines Y’all.

That’s cool, add that to my list of never having caught one before. I didn’t know you could catch them inshore. Any good to eat?

Spadefish are good etn, this was way too small though…

I caught one in Beaufort off the old bridge that they turned into a pier about a year or so ago. Real small one

I caught a teeny one in my cast net last year…

Caught a nice one surf fishing about 12 years ago. About 5-6 lbs. Not sure if that counts as “in-shore” but a guy watching me catch it said he’d never seen one caught there.

you willl catch em at the jetties pretty regularly throughout the summer

I know this is off topic but this post reminded me of a gag grouper I caught inshore last year. That pretty cool catching spade fish inshore. I have only seen them on the reefs.

Never even seen a spade much less catch on. Have caught some of those young gags under a bridge though.

juvy gags are all over structure in the harbor

yeah I just thought it was funny that it was caught in the ICW off of a dock.

Never caught a spade, going to work on that this weekend.

Have caught smaller spades off the pier. Have caught enough to have a meal even when they are small. Small ones bake or fry good. The big ones give you nice filets!

I have caught several big ones off a dock in the intracoastal as a kid (where it opens up behind Sullivans).
