Just wondering if anyone is catching Spadefish. Normally I go to R-8 (Capers Reef). I am not looking to load the boat, me and my fishing buddies just love the fight on light tackle. If not on R-8, has anyone seen any at the other reefs near Charleston/Kiawah?
They are here. I was thinking about going out to 4ki on Saturday but the seas are supposed to be around 3 feet. That’s probably a bit too rough for me and my 23’Trophy since we will have kids on board.
If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.
I haven’t seen any huge ones yet this year but I have been diving all live bottom and no wrecks which is where they normally are.

They are here and thick. I had a client catch one on a gotcha plug today. Not kidding. It hit like it was very hungry. No jelly balls in sight. I think the shrimpers have killed them off or they are inshore. I will post the picture when my client sends it to me. We caught about 100 today. Mostly small fish with a few 4-5 lbers in the mix. Also caught a 1,000 seabass and 500 bluefish. May not be that much, but it seemed liked that all day with 6 people fishing.

The spades are thick here in Murrells, caught one over 7 lbs last weds. And there was plenty of jellys. Gotta agree with Knot, ever drop was bsb after bsb! Even caught bsb and blues on the sabikis.

They are at every wreck out to 100ft right now with some very big ones mixed in
Schools are a lot smaller than they used to be. Hopefully just a bad year and not a result of exploitation.

All three. I was going to go tomorrow but the weather is too choppy. Not worth it for me. Rough weather and spadefishing usually dont go hand in hand.
they start in big schools out deep 100ft + and then disperse as they come in shallow- i saw some real big schools at beginnning of season and same size as last few years in same areas at same time so hopefully the stock is staying strong…funny thing is i’ve never even fished for them
Some people keep a bunch. They are just to fun to catch only once.
They never leave. Every time I dive larger wrecks I see tons of huge schools of them and fewer BSB than live bottom areas.

Unfortunately exploitation may have something to do with the smaller schools…see far too many charters and rec anglers bringing home 40 a trip, then wonder two weeks later why they are not catching many anymore:roll_eyes: too great of a fishery for kids to be abusing it! not starting any controversary, just an observation over the years. Can’t wait to get after them myself!

Boy that’s sporting. Hang right at the boat and blast away at them. In a week everyone will have the tastiest fish that swims in the most abundance that any of us have probably ever seen. Go get them, quit shooting the spades. Everything is askew when you can blast spades like that and not keep bsb’s. I hate our government.
I caught one in my crab trap in the Folly River on Sunday morning.
just outta curiosity they come into surf casting range much? i find plenty of jellyballs around so wonderin if they follow them that close to shore.
