Hey can anyone help me find some spadefish. Where should I go to catch them and also will they bite this time of year? Bait I know who be the jelly balls. I just don’t know to locate them. All the help will be greatly appreciated .
Thanks

Jelly balls were everywhere at the edisto nearshore. Couldn’t buy a spade though.

They might not group up on the wrecks all year long, but they are around. I’ve even seen them in January in 130-150’ of water. It’s pretty common for divers to see schools of them most of the year (thought I don’t dive much in the winter any more) over live bottoms.
Last weekend I dove on live bottom in 80’ and while the viz was terrible under the thermocline, I did see the biggest school of spadefish I have ever seen come up behind me. They were so thick it blocked out some of the light from above. Not much size to them though. Normally they can be found on the charleston 60 but it can be a crap shoot since they stick together and move around alot. Always good to have a plan B if you are targeting spadefish.

Thanks for all the help guys. I would love to get into them. I might check that out one Saturday. It’s been 5 years or longer since I went with someone and caught them. I had a blast and would like to take my girlfriend to catch them .

We were at 4ki Saturday and I didn’t see any. Lots of jellyballs, but didn’t see any spades. The water was a bit rougher than I expected it would be though. There were several other boats out there with us and none stayed too long, so I don’t think they were exactly slaying them either. Would love to hear if anyone did see them Saturday at 4ki.
They were all over the edisto offshore reef on sat. I mean everywhere. Jellyballs everywhere too, I tried to rig up a teaser to bring them in, but its hard to take their focus off the 15,000 jellyballs floating by. There was an awesome article in South Carolina sportsman a few years ago showing the best way to do it, using a coathanger to string about 10 jellyballs up to bring them in. Never have gotten to try it successfully, but sounds good in theory.
Thanks for letting me cut them up and get the red stuff all over my shirt ReelTalk, I really appreciated that

I wonder if making a nice mash of jellyball chum, floating in a big onion sack would be any good. Speaking out of my league here, if you ever see me offshore in my boat, then I’m lost and in dire straits.

Float out a purple balloon. Sounds crazy, but it’ll bring em in and keep em on site. Some people on here know what I’m talking about.

Can’t be leave you let that out! Remember not long ago about 6 boats casting to our purple balloon and everyone catching the chit out of them. Balloon had a menhaden under it for cobia and the boats around us wore out the cobia and spades! That day all the spades were in the 8/10lb class, a ton of fun on lite spinning gear.
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

Yeah I was there. One of the best days on the pond to date. Remember when the balloon popped and we wanted to run you off the reef, until you dug out another one. Then you were the hero again! Watching them 2 little boys in that other boat was what made the day. They had a ball. Y’all caught 2 nice Cobia that day. I was the one that yelled at you and told you those Cobia were hovering there.
